Hawley proposes requiring all federal buildings to display ‘In God We Trust’
Senator Josh hawley (R-Missouri) has introduced the “In God We Trust Act,” a bill that would require the national motto “In God We Trust” to be prominently displayed on every federal public building in the United States. Hawley initially proposed this idea in July 2024 during the National Conservatism Conference, advocating for the motto to replace symbols like the transgender flag on government buildings. The legislation tasks the general Services Administration with inscribing or displaying the motto in a visible location on all federal buildings.
the motto “In God We Trust” was officially adopted as the U.S. national motto in 1956 during President Dwight Eisenhower’s administration, also becoming a mandatory inscription on U.S.currency. Hawley emphasizes that the motto symbolizes the foundational role of faith in America’s liberty and prosperity, reflecting its historical roots dating back to President Abraham Lincoln and its adoption amid the Cold War as a contrast to atheistic communism.
Hawley, re-elected in 2024 and an outspoken advocate for religious liberty and Christian nationalism, introduced this bill shortly after former President Donald Trump hosted a White House religious liberty event were he donated his family Bible to the Museum of the Bible and supported protecting prayer rights in public schools. The proposed legislation aligns with Hawley’s broader agenda to strengthen the role of faith in public life and government institutions as the U.S. approaches its 250th anniversary.
Josh Hawley proposes requiring all federal buildings to display phrase ‘In God We Trust’
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced a bill Tuesday to install the national motto, “In God We Trust,” on every public building in the United States.
Hawley first floated the idea last July during his remarks at the 2024 National Conservatism Conference, when he called for all public buildings to replace the transgender flag with the national motto. The “In God We Trust Act” would require the administrator of the General Services Administration to “inscribe or display in a place of prominence on every public building” the words “In God We Trust,” according to the bill’s text.
“The In God We Trust Act will ensure that the federal government—as well as the American people for whom it works—never forgets the ultimate source of the liberty and prosperity this country enjoys,” Hawley said in a news release. “As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, this bill would restore faith to its rightful place in the halls of government.”
“In God We Trust” became the U.S. motto in 1956, when President Dwight Eisenhower signed into law a bill that also mandated the motto be printed on U.S. currency. This is why every U.S. dollar bill features the words “In God We Trust.”
“Our national motto goes all the way back to the days of President Lincoln,” Hawley said. “Congress adopted ‘In God We Trust’ as our national motto in 1956 during the rise of atheist communism, and it remains our national motto today.”
Hawley, whom Missourians reelected to the Senate last year, deemed himself “a dedicated advocate for religious liberty” on his 2024 campaign website. Also, as part of his 2024 NatCon speech, Hawley affirmed that he “calls America a Christian nation” and he is “advocating Christian nationalism.”
TRUMP DONATES FAMILY BIBLE AND TOUTS RIGHT TO SCHOOL PRAYER AT WHITE HOUSE RELIGIOUS EVENT
The Missouri senator’s move to introduce the “In God We Trust Act” comes one day after President Donald Trump held a White House Religious Liberty Commission event, during which he announced that he gave his family’s bible to the Museum of the Bible.
Trump also said during the event that the Education Department would enact policies aimed at protecting prayer in public schools.
