Over 1,000 people remain missing after destructive Maui fire, says Hawaii Governor Josh Green.
Hawaii Governor: Over 1,000 People Still Unaccounted for After Devastating Maui Fire
In a recent interview, Hawaii Governor Josh Green revealed that more than 1,000 individuals remain unaccounted for following the tragic Maui fire that ravaged the town of Lahaina. This devastating incident, which occurred a few weeks ago, has already been declared the deadliest fire in the United States in over a century, with over 100 confirmed lives lost.
The lack of response from President Joe Biden regarding this catastrophe has sparked intense criticism. Residents of Maui have expressed their frustration and disappointment over the President’s apparent disregard for their plight.
Unaccounted for and Identification Process
Margaret Brennan, host of CBS News’ ”Face The Nation,” questioned Governor Green about the number of individuals still unaccounted for and the timeline for identifying remains. Green responded, “More than 1,000 individuals are unaccounted for, approximately 1,050. It will still take several weeks to complete the identification process.”
He further explained the challenges faced by search and rescue teams, stating that 85% of the impacted area has already been thoroughly searched. However, the remaining 15% poses significant difficulties, as it includes larger buildings that require meticulous examination of floors and structures. Green expressed concerns that due to the intense heat of the fire, recovering meaningful remains may be impossible in some cases.
Despite these challenges, Green assured the public that state officials, in collaboration with the FBI, are making every effort to identify any remains that are discovered. He acknowledged that due to the fire’s intensity, there may be individuals who will never be found.
