Harris urges Californians to vote in favor of redistricting push

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has publicly endorsed California’s Proposition 50, a ballot measure aimed at approving a Democratic-led redistricting plan for the state’s congressional map. harris encouraged voters to support the measure, arguing that it counters Republicans’ efforts-especially those by Donald trump and GOP lawmakers-to rig the electoral system through redistricting. Proposition 50 would redraw California’s congressional districts through 2030, likely reducing Republican-held seats by five, as a direct response to a similar redistricting effort by Texas Republicans that would gain them five seats.

Harris’s support is part of her broader political reengagement following her 2024 election loss. Other prominent Democrats, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Elizabeth Warren, Alex Padilla, and former President Barack Obama, have also backed the measure. Polls suggest the proposition is favored by a majority of likely california voters, with Democrats heavily outspending opponents in the campaign. Governor gavin Newsom highlighted the measure’s goal to ensure fair elections and preserve independent redistricting, emphasizing that the state’s decision could impact national political balance.

Harris urges Californians to vote in favor of redistricting push

Former Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday threw her support behind the state Democrats’ ballot measure to redraw California’s congressional map.

Proposition 50, the ballot measure designed to approve the Democrat-led agenda to redraw California‘s congressional map, appears likely to pass in the special election next week based on polling data. Harris released a video of her filling out her ballot in favor of the measure on X, urging voters to do the same.

“I voted yes for Prop 50 because Donald Trump and the Republicans are trying to rig the system,” she said.

“They’re trying to do it in many ways, including rig the system around congressional maps,” Harris continued. “And so we, as Californians, are standing up to level the playing field, and we’re doing that by voting yes on Prop 50.”

Through the vote, California would “make the difference for so many people around the country,” Harris added.

Proposition 50 would enact a new congressional map for elections through 2030 that effectively strips Republicans of five House seats. The move was presented by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) as a tit-for-tat response to an aggressive redistricting move by Texas Republicans in August, which is expected to gain the party five House seats. California is the first blue state to respond to the move.

Harris’s public support for the measure is her latest step in the former vice president’s attempt to reenter the political scene after her loss in 2024. She is the latest Democratic heavyweight to support the measure, alongside Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Alex Padilla (D-CA), and, most prominently, former President Barack Obama.

“California, the whole nation is counting on you,” Obama said in an ad released earlier this month. “Democracy is on the ballot Nov. 4. Republicans want to steal enough seats in Congress to rig the next election and wield unchecked power for two more years.”

Proposition 50, Obama argued, would allow Californians to “stop Republicans in their tracks” — rhetoric later used by Harris.

“Prop 50 puts our elections back on a level playing field, preserves independent redistricting over the long term, and lets the people decide,” he said.

Democrats pumped substantial resources into the campaign in favor of Proposition 50, with supporters raising at least $129 million in contributions, compared to opponents’ $46 million, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Polling reflects the push — in a recent poll, published by the Public Policy Institute of California, 56% of likely voters said they will vote in support of the measure, and 43% said they will vote against it. Only 1% said they had not made up their mind.
