Haley seeks delegates in unnoticed Virgin Islands contest
Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley Sets Sights on U.S. Virgin Islands
Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley is determined to secure her first victory in the primary cycle by winning over the U.S. Virgin Islands. After conceding the Nevada caucuses to former President Donald Trump and opting out of competing in the state, Haley is now focusing on the U.S. Virgin Islands, which will hold its caucuses on Feb. 8.
Haley recently campaigned virtually in the U.S. Virgin Islands, engaging with Republican Party officials for the second time in recent weeks. She hopes to secure the territory’s four delegates. A group of Republicans gathered at the Buccaneer hotel on St. Croix for a virtual reception, while others from St. John and St. Thomas joined via Zoom.
Building Momentum
Despite setbacks in Iowa and New Hampshire, Haley remains optimistic about her campaign’s progress. She emphasized that she is the only GOP candidate still challenging the front-runner, former President Trump.
“We have now gotten a dozen out of the race. There’s just one more fellow we’re trying to catch up to. And when you think about what happened, we started at 2%. In Iowa, we ended up at 20%,” Haley shared with voters in the U.S. territory. “Then, in New Hampshire, we wanted to grow more, we got 43%.”
Haley’s campaign is primarily focused on the Palmetto State and has its sights set on Super Tuesday contests. The campaign has made it clear that it is not putting any energy into this week’s primary and caucuses in Nevada. Haley is determined to continue her campaign after South Carolina.
“After South Carolina, we’re going to Michigan. We’re going on to Super Tuesday. And we continue to add, and that’s the goal to continue to build on that momentum,” Haley declared. “I hope that we can build on that momentum here in the Virgin Islands too because I think it’s so important. And so we want to make sure that we do that.”
Equality and Voting Rights
During the event, Haley was asked about her stance on allowing the U.S. Virgin Islands and other territories to participate in the general election. While she expressed support for equality, she did not provide a definitive answer.
“I want those in territories to have equality just like every other American. I think when it comes to statehood or comes to voting, we have to look at that. I’d be willing to sit down and talk about that,” Haley responded cautiously. “I don’t know if I’m willing to say, ‘Yes, we need to do that’ because we need to look at all of the other territories involved and what that means.”
Haley acknowledged the significance of the caucus in the U.S. Virgin Islands and expressed openness to discussing the possibility of allowing territories to participate in the general election. However, she did not make a firm commitment.
Support from Rep. Ralph Norman
Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC), who served with Haley in the South Carolina Statehouse and is her sole congressional endorsement, has been actively supporting her campaign in the U.S. Virgin Islands. However, the campaign has not allocated any financial resources to the territory.
“We have not spent money there, and like we’ve said before, caucuses generally tend to benefit Trump given the fact that he is the former president and has been the leader of the party for the last eight years,” explained Betsy Ankeny, Haley’s campaign manager.
