Punxsutawney Phil, the iconic groundhog, made his annual appearance on Groundhog Day and delivered some exciting news. According to Phil’s prediction, the United States will not have to endure another six weeks of winter.
Early Friday morning, thousands of eager spectators gathered at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness this beloved tradition. This year marked the 138th celebration of Groundhog Day.
During the ceremony, Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow at Gobbler’s Knob, where it was determined whether he would see his shadow or not. If Phil sees his shadow, it is believed that a longer winter is on the horizon. However, if the weather is cloudy and the sun is blocked, Phil will not see his shadow.
The history of this holiday dates all the way back to 1887, with Punxsutawney Phil accurately predicting extended weather over 100 times since its inception. In fact, last year, Phil’s name was honored as the final member of the Weather Discovery Center’s Meteorologist Hall of Fame.
Interestingly, there have been some suggestions to change the way this holiday is celebrated. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) sent a letter to the President of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, proposing the use of a large gold coin instead of the groundhog and even suggesting a name change for the holiday. However, for now, the tradition continues with Punxsutawney Phil at the center of it all.
