Greg Casar launches reelection campaign with help from Mamdani adviser

Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX) officially launched his reelection campaign amid Texas Republicans’ aggressive redistricting efforts that threaten Democratic incumbents. Casar released a campaign video highlighting his background as a labor organizer and city council member in Austin. The video was produced by Morris Katz, a senior adviser to Zohran Mamdani, a prosperous New York mayoral primary candidate. The new Texas congressional map, backed by the Trump administration, merges Casar’s district with that of Rep. lloyd Doggett, prompting Doggett to retire rather than face a primary contest. Casar emphasizes a fresh approach to politics, distancing himself from the customary Democratic playbook. Katz praised Casar as a vital voice for the future of the Democratic Party. This campaign launch coincides with nationwide redistricting battles ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX) announced his reelection campaign Monday amid Texas Republicans’ redistricting efforts, releasing a video highlighting his time as a labor organizer.

The video was launched after the House Progressive Caucus Chairman avoided a possible primary against Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D) under the GOP’s new map. The video was made by Morris Katz, a senior adviser for 33-year-old Zohran Mamdani’s widely successful New York mayoral primary campaign, according to Politico.

The Washington Examiner has reached out to Katz for comment.

“You didn’t elect me to go learn the same broken playbook Democrats have used for decades, you sent me to write a new one, so I’m doing things differently,” 36-year-old Casar said in the video.

The video highlights Casar’s background on construction sites as a labor organizer and on the Austin City Council.

“Rep. Casar is one of the most powerful and important voices in the fight for the soul of the party and the future of the country,” Katz wrote on X Monday. “Deeply grateful that he’s not going anywhere.”

This campaign launch comes as the redistricting war ahead of the 2026 midterm elections rages across the country.

The Texas state legislature began redrawing the state’s congressional districts earlier this month, a move backed by the Trump administration. The redistricting effort would create 30 Republican-friendly congressional seats, compared to just eight districts favoring Democrats, a five-seat boost for the GOP from its current 25-13 advantage. The new map merges Casar and Doggett’s districts, leading Doggett, a longtime Texas Democrat, to retire.

“I had hoped that my commitment to reelection under any circumstances would encourage Congressman Casar to not surrender his winnable district to Trump,” Doggett said in a statement last week.

“While his apparent decision is most unfortunate, I prefer to devote the coming months to fighting Trump tyranny and serving Austin rather than waging a struggle with fellow Democrats. If Trump’s extreme gerrymandering prevails, I wish Congressman Casar the best,” he continued.
