Abbott: NYC mayor targets the wrong party in border busing lawsuit

Gov. Abbott Slams NYC Mayor’s Lawsuit Against Texas Bus Companies

Gov. Greg‌ Abbott (R-TX) strongly⁤ criticized the mayor of New York City for⁤ filing a “baseless” lawsuit against 17⁢ Texas busing companies, claiming ⁤that he had targeted “the wrong party”. ‌The⁤ lawsuit⁤ seeks $700 million to cover the expenses incurred ‍by New York City in caring for approximately 33,600 foreign nationals who were transported there after illegally crossing the southern border.

Mayor Eric Adams’ legal action prompted a⁤ response from‌ Abbott, who dismissed ⁤it as a mere “political statement” and expressed no concern about its potential impact. ⁤During an appearance on Fox News ⁤Sunday, Abbott argued that ⁤if the mayor truly wanted to address the issue of ⁣illegal immigration, he should be suing⁣ President Joe Biden instead of the bus companies. According to Abbott, it is Biden’s policies that ⁢have led to the ⁣significant influx‌ of immigrants into the United States, many of whom end up ‍in New York⁣ City.

Abbott confidently predicted that Adams’ lawsuit would ultimately fail, citing the fact that the immigrants in question were authorized to be in the country by‍ the Biden ‌administration. He even expressed his hope that Adams would be held responsible for the legal fees resulting from the lawsuit.

This‌ lawsuit is one of ‌two legal challenges Texas is currently facing regarding illegal immigration, with the other being brought by the U.S.⁤ Department of Justice. The DOJ’s lawsuit is centered around a state law that criminalizes ‌illegal border crossings, making them punishable by imprisonment or deportation.

The decision⁤ by New York City to sue‍ Texas bus companies follows⁤ Adams’ recent remarks⁣ about a “robbery pattern” involving a number of migrants. Crime statistics from the New York Police Department reveal an 11.3% increase in vehicle grand larcenies and a 6.9% increase in felony assaults in October 2023.

In December, Adams emphasized that major cities‌ should not be burdened with addressing national issues like illegal immigration. The previous month, he‌ joined mayors ‍from other major cities in penning a letter to President Joe Biden, requesting a meeting to discuss the ongoing migrant crisis.

‍Why does Governor Abbott question the timing of Mayor de Blasio’s ⁣lawsuit ⁤and accuse ⁣him of using it to divert attention⁢ from ‌the controversy surrounding⁣ the Texas abortion ‍law

Als who had illegally crossed the ⁢southern border ⁣and ‌were subsequently transported‍ to several states, including Texas.

In a⁣ press conference held on Tuesday, Governor Abbott expressed his vehement opposition to⁣ Mayor Bill de Blasio’s lawsuit,⁢ calling it an‌ “unjustified attack” on Texas businesses. He argued ‌that the‍ lawsuit was misdirected,⁣ as the responsibility for the release and transportation of these individuals lies ⁣with⁤ the federal government, particularly the Biden administration.

Governor Abbott emphasized that the state of⁤ Texas and⁢ its transportation companies were merely fulfilling their obligations as mandated by federal law. He emphasized that these companies were not ⁤involved in the‌ initial decision‍ to‌ release and transport these migrants, nor were they responsible for the associated ⁤costs incurred ⁤by⁤ New York⁤ City. Therefore, he deemed ⁢the lawsuit to be a baseless attempt to⁢ shift ⁣blame and responsibility onto Texas.

The governor further⁣ highlighted the apparent hypocrisy‍ of Mayor de Blasio, who issued an executive order ⁢in August requiring ⁢city agencies and ⁢contractors to sever business ties with any entity involved in⁤ the‌ construction or operation of the border ‍wall. Governor Abbott questioned how the mayor could justify such actions while ‌simultaneously ⁢seeking financial⁢ compensation from Texas businesses involved in⁢ the transportation of migrants.

Additionally, Governor Abbott criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the border crisis,⁢ stating that it had turned a blind eye to ⁤the implications and ⁢burdens placed on states like Texas. He argued that the federal government should bear the responsibility⁢ of ensuring the well-being and healthcare of these individuals, rather than burdening local governments and businesses.

Furthermore, Governor Abbott questioned the‌ timing of Mayor de⁢ Blasio’s lawsuit, which coincides with⁣ the ‍ongoing political dispute over Texas’ recently passed abortion law. He accused the mayor‍ of pursuing this lawsuit as an attempt to divert attention‌ from the controversy surrounding the Texas law.

In⁤ response to the lawsuit, the governor vowed to vigorously defend Texas busing companies⁢ and taxpayers ‌against these unfounded claims. He asserted that Texas stands ‍on solid legal ground and will not be intimidated ⁤by baseless attacks from out-of-state politicians.

As the legal battle between New York City and Texas continues, it remains⁣ to be seen how the court will rule on this contentious issue. Nevertheless, Governor Abbott’s strong condemnation ⁢of Mayor de Blasio’s⁢ lawsuit sends a clear message that Texas will not be used as a political scapegoat and will firmly defend itself against any unjust accusations.
