“It sounds like insanity is behind it because it really is offensive. It may be the most reprehensible thing that I’ve seen take place over the past 48 hours,” Abbott expressed. ”What’s happening in New York is outrageous, and it’s not just about what’s happening there, but the root cause of it all, which is Joe Biden’s open border policies.”
The pilot program in question will provide around 500 families staying at the Roosevelt Hotel with these cards. The amount they receive every 28 days will depend on the size of their family, with a family of four receiving $1,000. However, this program comes with a hefty price tag of $53 million for the city.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ spokeswoman, Kayla Mamelak, has defended the program, highlighting its potential cost savings. She stated, “Not only will this provide families with the ability to purchase fresh food for their culturally relevant diets and the baby supplies of their choosing, but the pilot program is expected to save New York City more than $600,000 per month, or more than $7.2 million annually.”
This program replaces a previous policy that was costing the city $11 per meal to feed migrants. The cards will only be accepted at specific stores, such as grocery stores, convenience stores, and bodegas. To ensure accountability, migrants will need to sign affidavits confirming their agreement to spend the allowance solely on food and baby supplies, or else risk losing this privilege.
According to recent reports, over 157,000 immigrants have arrived in New York City since last year, a population that exceeds the size of the state’s capital, Albany, New York, by one-and-a-half times. Out of these immigrants, more than 37,600 were sent by Texas since August 2022, as stated in the most recent press release from Gov. Abbott’s office.
