Greene says Venezuelan ‘narrative not working for most people’

Marjorie Taylor Greene, in her first TV appearance since leaving Congress on ABC’s The View, criticized the U.S. operation in Venezuela – Operation Absolute Resolve – saying the “narrative” behind raids that led to the capture of Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores “is not working for most people.” She argued the U.S. should prioritize American problems such as fentanyl coming across the Mexico border (which she linked to Chinese chemical precursors and rising overdoses in her district) and said it’s inconsistent to hold Maduro accountable while not targeting Mexican cartels. Greene also questioned U.S. authority to discourage other countries from seizing territory if the U.S. conducts arrests abroad. Maduro and Flores have pleaded not guilty in the southern District of New York to narcotics- and weapons-related charges. The segment noted prior U.S. strikes on venezuelan ships under former President Trump and that Greene, once a staunch Trump ally, has drifted apart from him after leaving politics.

Marjorie Taylor Greene says Venezuelan ‘narrative not working for most people’

Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene criticized the recent operation in Venezuela because it did not “put the American people first.”

Greene appeared on ABC News’s The View on Wednesday for her first television appearance since leaving Congress. As a self-proclaimed “MAGA Republican,” Greene speculated that most Americans don’t believe the “narrative” behind the Operation Absolute Resolve by the Army’s Delta Force, which included seven strikes against Caracas, Venezuela, and the capture of former Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

“Drugs killing Americans is a serious issue. Fentanyl overdose deaths in my district skyrocketed by 280%, but fentanyl was coming across the Mexico border, and that comes from Chinese chemical precursors. It wasn’t Venezuela that we were ever talking about,” Greene said.

Greene was referring to the narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine-importation conspiracy, and weapons charges against Maduro and Flores. Both pleaded not guilty in the Southern District of New York on Monday.

“So, you can’t hold Maduro accountable and not hold Mexican cartels accountable, who are No. 1, so that doesn’t work for me,” Greene said. “That entire narrative is not working for most people who are saying, ‘Wait a minute, I thought [Make America Great Again] was America first. I thought we voted to put the American people first.’”

“I think it’s even a deeper issue: If it’s OK to go into Venezuela and arrest Maduro, then why are we telling China, ‘You can’t go and take Taiwan?’ Why are we telling Russia, ‘You can’t go take Ukraine?’ Who are we to tell any country anything?” Greene added.

In September, President Donald Trump launched his first strike against a Venezuelan ship that was alleged to be carrying drugs. Since then, over two dozen strikes have hit other Venezuelan ships. Another seven strikes hit Caracas the day the Army Delta Force invaded the city to detain Maduro and Flores.

Trump asserted he saved 25,000 American lives with every boat destroyed.

Greene began 2025 as a staunch supporter of Trump, but ended the year — having left Congress and politics in general — at odds with him.
