Granger Smith shares ‘agreement’ with wife after son’s tragic death.
Former Country Star Granger Smith Opens Up About Keeping His Family Together After Tragic Loss
Former country star Granger Smith recently shared the “agreement” he made with his wife Amber Bartlett to preserve their family unity following the devastating accidental drowning of their 3-year-old son in 2019.
The 43-year-old singer and his wife recounted the heart-wrenching day when their son River was rushed to the hospital after a pool accident at their Texas home. According to Today, doctors informed them that there was “zero chance” of their little boy’s survival.
“We sought a second opinion,” Smith revealed. “The second team confirmed the devastating news. Sympathetically, they told us, ‘There is no chance.'”
After receiving this heartbreaking prognosis, the couple found solace in a serene garden. “We sat there, completely stunned,” Smith shared.
“Then, in that moment, we looked at each other and acknowledged the statistics. We knew that many couples don’t survive such a tragedy,” he continued. “The odds were against us. The world seemed to be against us, and people can be cruel and perpetuate negativity.”
“He’s my husband and I love him so much,” Amber Bartlett tells https://t.co/LaKO1WBr7r. “We’re both walking through the exact same grief.” https://t.co/D27gem1pmP

“So, right then and there, we made an agreement. It was almost like a business agreement,” Smith revealed. “We said, ‘Okay, we’re going to face this together. The world will come at us, we’ll feel immense pain, and we’ll encounter enormous obstacles, but we will not let it tear us apart. We have to make this agreement for the sake of our other two children, at the very least.”
Smith, who was with River at the time of the accident, credited his wife for being the pillar of strength that held their marriage together during the grieving process.

“At any moment, she could have said, ‘How could you let this happen to our boy? How could you turn your back on our baby?'” the former country singer admitted. “In her deepest and darkest moments of anger, guilt, or depression, she could have easily blamed me for what happened in the backyard.”
“But she never did. Not once,” he added. “Not ever. And if she had slipped up in her worst, darkest moment just once, it could have inflicted an irreparable wound in my soul. It might have been the thing that tore us apart forever. But she didn’t do that.”
Bartlett attributed her ability to avoid blaming Smith for their son’s death to “the grace of God.”
“I simply never felt that way,” she expressed. “This wasn’t something he did or something I failed to do. We are a couple. How could I ever place blame on him?”
“I just didn’t,” Bartlett continued. “I didn’t have an answer as to ‘why?’ He’s my husband, and I love him so much. We’re both navigating through the same overwhelming grief.”
Smith and Bartlett have four children together: London, their daughter; Lincoln, their older son; River, their late son; and Maverick, their fourth son, who was born in August 2021.
