Goya CEO blames COVID-19 and Ukraine war for rising grocery costs.
Goya Foods CEO Robert Unanue Addresses Rising Grocery Prices
In a recent interview, Goya Foods CEO Robert Unanue discussed the factors contributing to the increased prices of groceries, citing the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
“We bring in food from all over the world and transportation during the height of this went up tenfold, now that has come back down, it doesn’t mean inflation is coming down, it is coming back down more to logical levels. But weather had a big impact, in Europe, droughts and then followed by heavy rains have destroyed crops in Italy, in Spain, and around the world.”
Unanue highlighted the significant rise in fertilizer prices since the start of the war between Ukraine and Russia, stating that it has “tripled.” He also mentioned how the cost of transportation has increased “tenfold” recently.
Inflation and Grocery Essentials
Unanue emphasized that inflation remains “very strong” in the center aisle of the grocery store, where the essential items are located.
These comments come as annual inflation slowed to 3% in June, marking 12 consecutive months of decline after reaching a peak of 9.1% in June of the previous year. The report also revealed the smallest rise in annual inflation since March 2021.
The War in Ukraine
The war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has garnered international attention. Many countries, including the United States, have pledged support to Ukraine in its conflict against Russia.
During a recent trip to Europe, President Joe Biden commended Ukraine for its resilience in the face of Russia’s “crimes against humanity.” He expressed determination in defending freedom and unity against such aggression.
“The defense of freedom is not the work of a day or a year. It’s the calling of our lifetime — of all time,” he said. “We are steeled for the struggle ahead. Our unity will not falter, I promise you.”
