Connecticut’s Most Wide-Ranging Gun Control Measure Takes Effect
A new gun control law in Connecticut, hailed as the most comprehensive since the 2013 legislation following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, will go into effect on Sunday. This law, signed by Democratic Governor Ned Lamont in June, includes a ban on open carrying of firearms and limits the sale of handguns to three per person within a 30-day period. However, proponents of stricter gun legislation are determined to continue their efforts.
Continuing the Fight Against Gun Violence
“We will not take a break and we cannot stop now, and we will continue to pass life-saving laws until we end gun violence in Connecticut. Our lives depend on it,” said Jeremy Stein, executive director of Connecticut Against Gun Violence.
Gun rights supporters immediately challenged the law in court, while Connecticut’s previous landmark gun law from 2013 is also facing legal disputes. The new law in Connecticut also includes provisions such as increased bail and stricter probation and parole for repeat offenders of serious gun offenses, an expanded assault weapons ban, harsher penalties for possession of large-capacity magazines, and broader safe-storage rules. Despite the new law, State Senate President Pro Tempore Martin Looney, a Democrat, emphasized that the battle for gun control is not over. He plans to pursue further restrictions on monthly gun purchases and the implementation of microlabeling or ammunition microstamping to aid law enforcement in tracing bullet casings.
Governor Lamont, who proposed the new law, expressed interest in collaborating with fellow governors in the Northeast to develop similar legislation. He believes that given the rapid advancements in technology, Connecticut can only do so much within its borders.
