GOP Senator: I’ll support Trump in the primary, but he should withdraw as he’ll lose to Biden.
Sen. Bill Cassidy Suggests Trump Should Drop Out of Race
During a recent interview, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) made some interesting remarks about former President Donald Trump and the upcoming general election. While Cassidy stated that he would vote for Trump if he wins the Republican Party presidential primary, he also expressed concerns about Trump’s chances against President Joe Biden.
Cassidy’s comments were made during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. This comes after Trump faced criticism for urging other Republican candidates to drop out and support him, despite the fact that primary voting is still months away and no primary debates have taken place.
One of Cassidy’s main points was that Trump is facing 91 felony counts, with some of the strongest evidence coming from Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into his handling of classified documents. Cassidy mentioned that there is even a tape recording of Trump discussing the matter, which could potentially lead to a conviction.
“If that is proven, then we may have a candidate for president who has been convicted of a crime,” Cassidy stated. “I think Joe Biden needs to be replaced, but I don’t think Americans will vote for someone who’s been convicted. So, I’m just very sorry about how all this is playing out.”
When asked if he believes Trump should drop out of the race, Cassidy responded, “I think so. But, obviously, that’s up to him. I mean, you’re just asking me my opinion.”
“But he will lose to Joe Biden, if you look at the current polls,” Cassidy continued. “I’m a Republican. I think any Republican on that stage in Milwaukee will do a better job than Joe Biden. And so I want one of them to win. If former President Trump ends up getting the nomination, but cannot win a general, that means we will have four more years of policies which have led to very high inflation, to a loss of purchasing power for the average American equivalent to $10,000, and to many other things which I think have been deleterious to our country’s future.”
When asked if he would vote for a Democrat over Trump if Trump wins the nomination, Cassidy firmly stated, “I’m going to vote for a Republican.”
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) says that if Donald Trump wins the GOP nomination that he will vote for him — but warns that he should drop out of the race now because President Biden will beat him in a general election.
