Waltz in addressing a letter to U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro and U.S. Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth. The letter describes a meeting with the families of the fallen service members, most of whom were U.S. Marines.

The GOP lawmakers were shocked to learn that the Marines and soldier had not already been posthumously promoted. As a result, they have recommended “honorary promotion” for the following service members who were killed in the line of duty:

- Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Kareem M. Nikoui of Norco, California
- Marine Corps Sgt. Johanny Rosario Pichardo of Lawrence, Massachusetts
- Marine Corps Cpl. Humberto A. Sanchez of Logansport, Indiana
- Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jared M. Schmitz of St. Charles, Missouri
- Marine Corps Cpl. Daegan W. Page of Omaha, Nebraska
While these promotions may be largely symbolic, they can have small impacts on survivors’ benefits, according to the Air Force Times. It is crucial to prioritize the well-being of the families affected by this tragedy.
Unfortunately, under the current administration, we cannot expect much. The Biden administration is unlikely to address their Afghanistan debacle or take meaningful action to prevent future casualties. President Joe Biden’s lack of empathy and accountability has been evident in his responses to other crises.
Despite the challenges, credit must be given to the GOP lawmakers for their efforts to do the right thing. It is a small step, but it is a step in the right direction.
