GOP has ‘big problems nationwide’ after Miami loss: Byron York

Byron York, chief political correspondent for the Washington Examiner, commented on the recent Miami mayoral election, where Democrat Eileen Higgins won and is the first Democrat to be elected mayor in Miami in 28 years. York predicted that Democrats will use this victory as a sign that voters are growing tired of former President Donald Trump, portraying it as a precursor to potential Democratic successes in the 2026 elections. Despite this, York noted that it’s not entirely clear that the Miami race alone signals a broader trend, but acknowledged that Republicans face notable challenges nationwide. The election results showed democrat dominance in nearly 90% of the 2025 races, even though Republican candidate Emilio Gonzalez, endorsed by Trump, lost by 16 points. While miami will have a democratic mayor, the city is also set to host Trump’s presidential library, planned for completion after 2028.

Byron York warns GOP has ‘big problems nationwide’ after Miami loss

Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York predicted that Democrats will tout Miami Mayor-elect Eileen Higgins as a “harbinger” of more election wins for Democratic candidates next year.

“Anything that a Democrat wins right now, the party is going to be able to crow and say this is a sign that voters are already tired of Donald Trump and this is a harbinger of Democratic victory in 2026,” York said on Fox Business’s Kudlow on Wednesday. “Not really clear from this particular race, but Republicans do have big problems nationwide.”

None of the 13 candidates vying to replace Miami Mayor Francis Suarez received a majority of the vote in the nonpartisan race, prompting a runoff election.

Higgins is the first Democrat to be elected mayor in Miami in the last 28 years. Former Vice President Kamala Harris won Miami in 2024 despite it being controlled by Republicans and independent lawmakers.

Republican candidate Emilio Gonzalez lost by 16 points despite being endorsed by President Donald Trump.

Democrats dominated the 2025 races, winning or overperforming in nearly 90% of the races.

FOR NOW, THE BIG FIGHT IS DEMOCRATIC ANGER VS. TRUMP ACCOMPLISHMENT

While Miami will be led by a Democratic mayor for the first time in years, it is expected to be the home of Trump’s presidential library, which is scheduled to be completed after 2028.
