GOP crowds rejected top 2024 contenders over the weekend.
The Iowa State Fair: A Showcase of Republican Contenders
The Iowa State Fair kicked off last week, setting the stage for an exciting display of Republican contenders vying for the 2024 presidential nomination. With the aroma of fried foods filling the air and fair activities in full swing, several candidates took the opportunity to engage in retail politics and charm voters in the Hawkeye State.
However, amidst the bustling fairgrounds, one figure loomed large: former President Donald Trump. As the undeniable front-runner, Trump enjoyed a significant double-digit lead over his opponents, and his presence was felt as his supporters passionately voiced their allegiance, even heckling some of his Republican rivals.
Where Trump, DeSantis, and the Rest of the Republican 2024 Field Stand on Key Issues
One candidate who faced disruptions during his visit was Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who has become the focus of Trump’s ire as the only other contender to break into double digits in national polling. While flipping pork chops at the famed pork tent, DeSantis encountered chants of “We love Trump!” from the former president’s fervent fans. In an interesting twist, a banner flew across the sky, urging DeSantis to “Be likable Ron!”
Undeterred by the heckling, DeSantis continued to explore the fair with his family, participating in various activities and engaging with voters.
Former Vice President Mike Pence also made an appearance, taking the opportunity to connect with voters at the event. However, he faced a challenging question about the events of January 6, a subject that has proven difficult for many Republicans to navigate. When asked, “Why did you commit treason on Jan. 6?” Pence stood firm, reiterating his previous statements on the matter. He emphasized that the American presidency belongs to the American people and that he chose the Constitution when faced with a decision between it and the former president.
Pence faced additional heckling from Trump supporters, who questioned his Christianity and labeled him a “traitor.”
While Vivek Ramaswamy received a warm welcome from large and enthusiastic crowds, he too encountered some taunting from fair attendees. Ramaswamy has been vocal about his support for Trump throughout his various indictments and emphasizes building on the former president’s legacy. However, even he couldn’t escape a bit of playful banter, as two fairgoers held up a banner that humorously read, “Eat a corndog, you coward.” It’s worth noting that Ramaswamy is a vegetarian.
The fair is far from over, and more candidates are set to make their appearances. Throughout the week, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, former Texas congressman Will Hurd, Perry Johnson, and Ryan Binkley will join Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) for engaging “fairside chats.”
