GOP criticizes Hunter Biden lawyer for allegedly threatening to use the president as a witness.
Republicans React to Hunter Biden’s Attorney’s Warning to Call President Joe Biden as Witness
Republicans are responding strongly to the recent revelation that Hunter Biden’s attorney, Chris Clark, had warned Justice Department prosecutors that he would call President Joe Biden to the witness stand if they charged his client. The news came to light through a trove of leaked emails to Politico over the weekend, sparking outrage among House chairmen leading the congressional investigation into Joe and Hunter Biden.
Denouncement of the Threat
Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) expressed his disapproval, stating, “Hunter Biden’s attorneys’ threats to call Joe Biden to testify in his son’s legal defense is just another example of how the Bidens have used ’the brand’ to receive privileges no other American would ever be given.” Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) also weighed in, describing Clark’s warning as “sounding like more of a threat.” Jordan further emphasized that if Joe Biden were called as a witness, he would be subject to cross-examination in court, raising questions about how the President would handle such a situation. However, the most significant takeaway for Jordan was the possibility that Hunter Biden could have evaded charges altogether.
Clark’s Argument and IRS Whistleblower Testimony
According to Politico, Clark’s warning to Weiss was part of a larger argument against charging Hunter Biden. Clark claimed that the prosecution would be seen as succumbing to political pressure from Republicans and that it would be inappropriate for a sitting President to testify at a criminal trial, potentially leading to a “Constitutional crisis.” This revelation aligns with the testimony of two IRS investigators who attended a meeting in October 2022, which they considered evidence of Hunter Biden receiving special treatment in the case. One of the IRS whistleblowers’ lawyers stated that Clark’s threat to have Joe Biden testify aligns with their clients’ testimony that Clark had previously threatened the prosecutors with “career suicide.”
Republican Response
A spokesperson for Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), a co-chair of the Whistleblower Protection Caucus and a key figure in the Biden family investigation, emphasized the importance of fair application of the law, stating, “What is political is threatening to use the influence of the sitting president of the United States to protect Hunter Biden from facing justice.” The spokesperson further criticized the Biden DOJ, claiming that political influence has found a home within it.
The Ongoing Prosecution
The prosecution against Hunter Biden, resulting from a lengthy investigation, is still ongoing. A plea deal that was set to be entered into with special counsel David Weiss fell apart in July, leading to an impasse. The deal involved Hunter Biden pleading guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and signing a pretrial diversion agreement to avoid a felony gun charge. With Clark stepping down as Hunter Biden’s attorney due to his potential role as a witness in the plea dispute, the case may proceed to trial.
