The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg falsely claimed that Memorial Day marked the “first time” President Donald Trump paid tribute to Gold Star families, stating on Tuesday that it was “about time” the president honored them.
The president honored fallen troops and Gold Star families at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, thanking them for giving “the ultimate gift.” Goldberg, a frequent critic of Trump who will only refer to him as “you know who,” commended the president before offering a dig at him.
“It was about time we heard him give the Gold Star families their due,” Goldberg stated. “It was about time he did that, cause he spoke and said we are proud of our Gold Star families. This is the first time, at least, maybe — unless you’ve heard him do it?”
Fellow co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, who worked in Trump’s first administration, corrected Goldberg by pointing out that Trump hosted Gold Star families during his last term. Goldberg, however, countered by claiming that “the last time,” people “collectively” heard him talking about Gold Star families, it was done in a negative manner.
Last year, Trump visited the Arlington National Cemetery to honor Gold Star families of the 13 service members who were killed in Afghanistan amid the United States’s withdrawal from the country in August 2021. While former Vice President Kamala Harris accused Trump of committing a “political stunt” by attending the ceremonies commemorating the third anniversary of the Afghanistan withdrawal, others, including eight of the Gold Star families and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), defended Trump’s attendance, citing how the families had invited him.

During Trump’s first term, the president offered several tributes to the nation’s soldiers and those who have died defending the country. In 2019, for instance, Trump and first lady Melania Trump made a surprise visit just before Memorial Day weekend to honor the fallen soldiers.
Earlier this month, it was reported that ABC network executives had asked The View co-hosts to tone down their political content. This suggestion reportedly did not sit well with the hosts, who pushed back and argued that the show’s audience wanted to hear their insights on political matters.
