Goldberg advises Mamdani to ensure people pay ‘fair share’

The article discusses a conversation on *The View* between Whoopi Goldberg and Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic candidate for New York City mayor. Mamdani proposes a flat 2% tax on incomes over $1 million and an 11.5% corporate tax similar to that of New Jersey. Goldberg expressed conditional support for these taxes, emphasizing that she would be willing to pay them only if everyone-including large corporations like Amazon and Google-pays their fair share. The discussion highlights concerns about tax fairness, inequality, and how wealthy New Yorkers already pay notable portions of city taxes. Mamdani advocates for reducing inequality by taxing the rich more and shifting some tax burdens to wealthier neighborhoods, aiming for a fairer city. Both goldberg and mamdani agree on the importance of everyone contributing fairly to help improve New York City.

Whoopi Goldberg advises Mamdani to ensure ‘everybody is paying their fair share’ in taxes

Whoopi Goldberg told Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani that she would pay his proposed taxes on the rich “if everybody pays” on The View on Wednesday.

Goldberg took issue with Mamdani’s campaign platform of taxing all those who earn more than $1 million annually at a flat 2% rate

“Well, so one of the things that I’ve heard you talk about is making the city affordable for everybody, and that you’re gonna, you know, put a tax on people who make over a million bucks, but what I want to know —” Goldberg said before Mamdani interrupted her.

“With an exception for Joy,” Mamdani jokingly said, referring to cohost Joy Behar.

While most other hosts on the panel laughed, Behar, a former comedian, pursed her lips and looked away from Mamdani. Behar has an estimated net worth of $30 million and earns approximately $7 million on The View yearly.

“Think again, my friend,” Goldberg said. “But, listen, on Day One, why aren’t you going to big corporations like Amazon and Google and making sure that they pay what could really help the city raise up and get us where we need to be?”

“If you were running for mayor, I’d be voting for you, because I think, I think, Whoopi, to your point, the corporate greed that we’re seeing in this country, it cannot be separated from the level of inequality that people are living through,” Mamdani said.

He went on to explain that his platform includes a corporate tax rate of 11.5%, mirroring that of neighboring New Jersey.

“People think everybody that makes money does not care about the city,” Goldberg said. “The people who have money keep the city going. And sometimes people feel pushed out of the city because the zillions that they’re paying, whether for the [Metropolitan Transportation Authority], for the bus, for the this, doesn’t seem to be appreciated.”

New York’s top 1% already pay a combined 52% top tax rate, the highest in the country. Meanwhile, the top 1% pay about 48% of New York City’s bills, with 0.01% paying nearly 31%.

“So I just want to make sure that you understand people want to make the city work and people will back you if everybody is paying their fair share,” Goldberg added.

“Absolutely,” Mamdani agreed.

“If everybody pays, then I don’t mind paying. If just some folks are paying, I’m not happy,” Goldberg concluded.

Goldberg is an award-winning actress with an estimated net worth of $30 million. The View pays Goldberg an estimated annual salary of, $8 million, an inside source shared with OK! Magazine.

Mamdani has voiced his opposition to billionaires, outlining his reasoning on MSNBC’s Meet the Press.

IN FOCUS: IS SOCIALISM AS POPULAR AS THE MEDIA THINK?

“I don’t think we should have billionaires because it is so much money in a moment of such inequality,” Mamdani said. “And ultimately, what we need more of is equality across the city and across the state and country, and I look forward to working with everyone, including billionaires, to make a city that is fair for all of us.”

A June memo from Mamdani’s campaign revealed that his administration would “Shift the tax burden from overtaxed homeowners in the outer boroughs to more expensive homes in richer and whiter neighborhoods.” At the same time, lower tax payments would go to those in neighborhoods such as Jamaica and Brownsville.
