In the depths of the rainforests in Peru, a creature lurks that has been dubbed the “vampire wasp” by the New York Post. This wasp, scientifically known as Capitojoppa amazonica, has recently been discovered and it’s not for the faint of heart.

This bright yellow bug stands out not only because of its massive head, which resembles a distorted Halloween mask, but also because of its gruesome feeding habits. It impales its victims, extracting their bloodlike fluid, and then proceeds to devour them from the inside out.
However, before you start picturing scenes from B-grade horror movies, it’s important to note that this wasp primarily feasts on caterpillars, beetles, and spiders.
The wasp was discovered in Peru’s National Reserve of Allpahuayo-Mishana by Brandon Claridge, a doctoral candidate in biology at Utah State University. Claridge explained that the female wasp locates its host, deposits a single egg inside it, and then the hatched larvae consume the host from within. The cycle continues as the new wasps rest inside the host’s corpse until they are ready to hatch.
Interestingly, the female wasp also feeds on a bloodlike fluid called hemolymph found in bugs, gaining nutrients for egg maturation.
But that’s not all. Another species of wasp, Calistoga crassicaudata, has also been discovered in the Amazon. These wasps lay their eggs in a host, which is eventually killed by the hatching larvae. While they have giant stingers, they are harmless to humans as their stingers are too weak to penetrate our skin.
It seems that the Amazon is a treasure trove of bizarre and terrifying creatures. In fact, new species are being discovered almost weekly, according to entomologist Ilari Sääksjärvi.
