George W. Bush’s Awkward Surprise Party for Twin Daughters’ 16th Birthday
Jenna Bush Hager Recalls Awkward Surprise 16th Birthday Party
Jenna Bush Hager recently shared a hilarious and cringe-worthy story about the surprise 16th birthday party her parents, former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush, threw for her and her twin sister, Barbara Bush Coyne.
In an episode of “TODAY with Jenna and Hoda,” jenna-bush-hager-says-her-wedding-mightve-been-very-different-if-shed-taken-then-president-bushs-advice-and-eloped” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Bush Hager recounted the scene of the surprise party. She revealed that she and her sister were tricked into waking up early for their drivers’ tests, only to be surprised with a pancake breakfast with all their friends.
“We were going to kiss my dad goodbye for school, my mom was like, ‘Go in and tell dad goodbye,’ and we walked in and all of our friends were sitting there,” Bush Hager explained.
However, the party took an awkward turn when Bush Hager revealed that her parents had invited both her ex-boyfriend and her current boyfriend, and had seated them next to each other.
“My parents were very creative birthday people, which was fun, but then it gets kind of awkward because it’s like [they have] the old boyfriend sitting next to the new boyfriend,” she said.
Her cohost, Hoda Kotb, expressed surprise and exclaimed, “Your parents are wild!”

Not the First Time Jenna Spills the Tea on Her Parents
This isn’t the first time Jenna Bush Hager has shared amusing anecdotes about her parents. In 2022, she revealed that her father had suggested eloping when she was planning her wedding.

“My dad wanted us to elope because it was a pain,” she revealed to Kotb. “He was like, ‘What are y’all doing? Y’all should just elope.’ I don’t know if he wanted us to go to Vegas to do it.”
Despite her father’s suggestion, Bush Hager chose to have a traditional wedding and tied the knot with Henry Chase Hager at the Bush family’s Prairie Chapel Ranch in Crawford, Texas.
