Gen. Raymond Odierno dies at 67

General Raymond Odierno, commander of U.S. and allied forces in the Iraq war, has died at age 67. In a statement released by the family, the general died Friday after a battle with cancer.
Odierno was the commander of the Army division that found and captured Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. After Hussein was found in an underground bunker, the general notably said the dictator was caught just as someone would catch a rat.

He retired in 2015 as Chief of Staff of the Army after 39 years of faithful service.

The general’s career culminated when he was the Army chief of staff under President Barack Obama from 2011 to 2015. He was also a commander for units in Albania, Kuwait and the U.S. throughout his 39 year long career.
“Throughout nearly four decades in uniform, Ray Odierno served his country with great dignity and courage.,” expressed Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin in a released statement. “He led bravely in peace and in war and he mentored an entire generation of future leaders.
Odierno is survived by his wife of 45 years, along with their three children and four grandchildren.
