Gavin Newsom on Dianne Feinstein: “It’s up to her.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom Declines to Call for Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s Resignation
In a recent interview with Chuck Todd on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” California Governor Gavin Newsom addressed the topic of 90-year-old Senator Dianne Feinstein’s ability to continue serving in her role. Despite her health problems and apparent limitations, Newsom refrained from calling for her resignation.
Todd questioned the governor about Feinstein’s daughter having power of attorney and the senator’s continued representation of 40 million people. Newsom responded, “Well, I leave it to her. I told you, I’m the most subjective human being in the world on this topic. I have no objectivity whatsoever.”
Newsom went on to defend Feinstein, reminiscing about their long-standing relationship. He shared, “I’ve known Dianne Feinstein since I was a kid. I interned with her in college. I still have a signed book from my days when she was mayor.”
Highlighting Feinstein’s past involvement, Newsom mentioned how she used to read laws to him regarding forest and vegetation management, as well as drought and water issues. He emphasized that her staff is highly active and capable of fulfilling her duties.
Despite this, Newsom expressed his reluctance to make another appointment for a U.S. Senate seat in California, following Senator Kamala Harris’s departure to become vice president. He acknowledged the hard work of Democratic candidates in the upcoming primary and stated, “I don’t want to tip the balance of that.”
