This year’s national average gas prices for Memorial Day weekend were the least expensive since 2021. And more importantly, while there has been some slight fluctuation in pricing, overall, fuel costs have held steady over the last 30 days. The average price for a gallon of regular gas a month ago was $3.16, essentially a negligible difference from today’s costs.

Gas prices have fluctuated a great deal in the last half a year, especially so in 2025. From December’s average prices being close to $3 per gallon to rising to nearly $3.30 per gallon in the winter, fuel costs have increased and decreased many times since the Christmas holiday. Several geopolitical factors, including oil supply and demand, changes of presidential administrations, tariffs, and wars, have contributed to the inconsistent costs associated with gas. That being said, typically, the main determinant for how much one spends on gas is based on the state in which he or she resides. 

People living on the West Coast reside in states with the most expensive gas in the nation, whereas those living within the states located near the Gulf of America have the cheapest fuel costs.

Mississippi has the cheapest gas in the country, at $2.657 per gallon. Next is Louisiana, at $2.727, and then Tennessee, at $2.729. Next is Alabama at $2.749 and then Texas to round out the five states with the lowest gas prices in the country, with a fuel costs of $2.75.

Conversely, California has the country’s most expensive fuel prices, with an average cost of $4.818 per gallon. Hawaii has the next highest prices at $4.483, followed by Washington state at $4.42. Oregon had a surge in increasing that put its statewide average price over the $4 per gallon threshold at $4.023. Nevada has the fifth-highest gas prices in the country at $3.94 per gallon.
