Disney and Netflix led in creating the most LGBTQ-inclusive content in 2022.
Netflix and Disney Lead in LGBTQ Content Creation
Netflix and Disney are at the forefront of promoting LGBTQ representation in Hollywood films for 2022, with an impressive 8% increase compared to the previous year.
GLAAD’s Annual Studio Responsibility Index reveals that Disney and Netflix surpassed other major motion picture studios in terms of releasing “LGBTQ-inclusive” content and woke films from January 1 to December 31, 2022.
The studios analyzed in the study include A24, Amazon Studios, Apple TV+, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, Sony, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros. Discovery, and their subsidiaries.
The Vito Russo Test
GLAAD used “The Vito Russo Test” to determine the inclusivity of films. This test rates a film based on the following criteria:
- The film includes a character who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer.
- The character is not solely defined by their sexual orientation or gender identity but possesses unique traits like straight/cisgender characters.
- The LGBTQ character’s presence significantly impacts the plot, going beyond providing commentary or stereotypes.
- The LGBTQ character’s story avoids offensive tropes or stereotypes and shows development. In films with multiple LGBTQ characters, at least one character must meet this criterion.
According to the GLAAD study, Walt Disney Studios and Netflix emerged as the leaders in promoting LGBTQ content among viewers.
Disney produced 24 out of 59 movies with LGBTQ content, making 41% of its films “inclusive.” This includes seven movies from Walt Disney Studios, five from Disney+, and 12 from Hulu. GLAAD also noted that “Walt Disney Studios included LGBTQ characters in all five of its Disney theatrical releases last year.”
Some of the films that passed the test include “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Thor: Love and Thunder,” “Better Nate Than Ever,” “Turning Red,” and more.
Disney was specifically mentioned for films like “Strange World” and “Lightyear,” which performed poorly at the box office. Additionally, Disney+ film “Zombies 3” received criticism for its LGBTQ stories aimed at children.
Netflix also contributed significantly to the woke agenda, producing 24 “LGBTQ-inclusive films” out of 107 releases, meeting the LGBTQ criteria in 22% of its films.
Some of the films that passed the test on Netflix include “Falling For Christmas,” “Do Revenge,” “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” “The Royal Treatment,” “Senior Year,” and more. The streaming site was also recognized for its transgender hero boy film “Wendell & Wild,” which targeted kids.
The GLAAD report celebrates the 50% increase in LGBTQ films from Hollywood studios over the past decade, calling it a culture-shift that supports and accepts LGBTQ individuals.
GLAAD CEO Sarah Kate Ellis stated that Hollywood has played a crucial role in promoting acceptance for LGBTQ people worldwide through films like “Blockers,” “Love, Simon,” “Booksmart,” “Strange World,” “Bros,” “Fire Island,” “Anything’s Possible,” and many others.
(Disclosure: The Daily Wire has announced plans for kids’ entertainment content.)

The impact of LGBTQ representation in Hollywood cannot be overstated. It contributes to the visibility and acceptance of LGBTQ individuals in society, challenging stereotypes and promoting understanding. LGBTQ representation on screen allows for greater representation behind the scenes as well, as it opens doors for LGBTQ actors, writers, and directors to tell their own stories.
GLAAD’s Annual Studio Responsibility Index serves as a vital tool in holding studios accountable for their representation of marginalized communities. It shines a light on the progress made and highlights areas that need improvement. The index not only celebrates studios like Disney and Netflix for their achievements but also pushes others to do better and be more inclusive.
While Disney and Netflix lead in LGBTQ content creation, it is important to acknowledge that there is still work to be done. The industry as a whole needs to continue diversifying its narratives and giving voice to underrepresented communities. LGBTQ individuals are not a monolith, and their stories go beyond the stereotypical coming out narratives. There is a need for more nuanced, intersectional stories that authentically portray the experiences and complexities of LGBTQ individuals across different backgrounds.
In conclusion, Disney and Netflix have emerged as pioneers in LGBTQ content creation, taking significant steps toward increasing representation and inclusivity in mainstream media. Their commitment to authentic storytelling and diverse narratives sets a positive example for the industry. However, the journey toward full LGBTQ representation is ongoing, and it requires the collective efforts of studios, filmmakers, and audiences. Through continued advocacy and support, we can create a media landscape that truly reflects the diversity of our world.
