French winery lawyers ridicule Brad Pitt’s role: ‘He engages in fantasies, not the reality of soil and grapes.’
Lawyers Mock Brad Pitt’s Involvement in French Wine Business, Demand $350 Million
Lawyers representing a company founded by Brad Pitt’s ex-wife, Angelina Jolie, have filed court papers that not only demand $350 million but also mock Pitt for his role in a French wine business.
Legal Battle Over Chateau Miraval
The attorneys, representing Jolie’s holding company for her shares in Chateau Miraval, filed a cross-complaint as the former couple continues their legal battle over the winery. The vineyard was purchased by the pair in 2011 while they were still married, and it has been a source of bitter contention since their divorce, according to Page Six.
“Pitt is an actor, not a winemaker,” the attorneys for Jolie’s company Nouvel wrote in the new filing. “He deals in illusions, not dirt and grapes.”
The attorneys go on to highlight Pitt’s focus on his acting career during the alleged period of building the business, including filming movies, attending premieres, and participating in Hollywood events.
According to the attorneys, Pitt spent millions on vanity projects, such as renovating swimming pools, rebuilding staircases multiple times, and restoring a recording studio.
“While he no doubt visited the vineyards to admire the work of the French laborers who actually made the business successful, Pitt is no vigneron,” the document says.
Nouvel’s attorneys claim that Pitt’s business owes their company $350 million and accuse him of seizing control of Château Miraval without a controlling ownership interest. They argue that Pitt treats the winery as his personal fiefdom, freezing out Nouvel.
“Incensed that Jolie sold Nouvel to Stoli rather than him, Pitt has acted like a petulant child, refusing to treat Nouvel as an equal partner in the business,” the filing says, while accusing Pitt of “looting” and “stripping” the business.
Meanwhile, Pitt sees his involvement with Miraval differently. In an interview with Wine Spectator in 2014, he stated, “I’m a farmer now. I love learning about the land and which field is most suitable for which grape, the drama of September and October: Are we picking today? Where are the sugar levels? How is the acidity? Is it going to rain? It’s been a schooling for me. I enjoy cleaning the forest and walking the land.”
