‘Free America’ marks Trump inauguration anniversary with walkouts

‘Free America’ protesters organize nationwide walkout on anniversary of Trump’s return to office

Nationwide protests against President Donald Trump are taking place on Tuesday afternoon, marking critics’ latest effort to frame him as a fascist.

The “Free America” protests will launch at 2 p.m., when thousands across the country are set to join in walking out of work, school, and commerce. The protests fall on the first anniversary of Trump’s second inauguration. They are being organized by Women’s March, a liberal group known for hosting massive events in Washington. Indivisible, which helped organize demonstrations against Tesla founder Elon Musk and Trump during the sweeping “No Kings” protests last year, is among those partnering to launch the initiative, along with groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union.

“We will withhold our labor, our participation, and our consent,” the movement’s website reads. “A free America begins the moment we refuse to cooperate. This is not a request. This is a rupture. This is a protest and a promise. In the face of fascism, we will be ungovernable.”

Around 1,246 Free America events were planned as of Tuesday morning, with roughly 43,000 RSVPs. Walkouts, including at city halls, local courthouses, and capitals, are planned in all 50 states.

Free America cites Trump’s immigration, military, and transgender policies as evidence that he poses an “escalating fascist threat.” The Trump administration has deployed or threatened to send National Guard troops to multiple cities over the past 12 months, saying they are needed to boost anti-crime and anti-rioting efforts. Most recently, the president floated sending the military to Minneapolis, where the city’s protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement have, at times, turned violent.

“ICE raids on our communities, troops occupying our cities, families torn apart, attacks on our trans siblings, mass surveillance, and terror used to keep us silent. It is time for our communities to escalate as well,” the website reads.

The Trump administration panned the movement as promoting “lies” about the White House.

“TDS libs are free to exercise their First Amendment rights however they desire,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Military.com. “We are free not to care about their lies.”

FETTERMAN DEFENDS TRUMP SUPPORTERS: ‘THEY ARE NOT FASCISTS’

Rachel O’Leary Carmona, executive director of Women’s March, said she wanted the demonstrations to mark “our belief that a free America is the only America worth calling great.”

“Women’s March is Women’s March; we’re known for our big marches and mobilizations,” she said. “We also have other protest tools in our toolbox. We decided that we were going to mark the one-year anniversary of Trump’s second inauguration, which also happens to fall around our anniversary. When we thought about what we wanted to do, we wanted to obviously protest, make a statement, and really voice our affirmation and our belief that a free America is the only America worth calling great. We wanted to be on the record with that.”
