‘Fourth of July: ‘Squad’ members criticize America for historical injustices.’
Reps. Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush Demand Reparations and Challenge America’s Independence
On the occasion of America’s independence, Representatives Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush used their platforms to advocate for reparations and shed light on the history of “stolen land” and slavery.
In a powerful Fourth of July message on Twitter, Bowman emphasized the importance of acknowledging the painful truth behind the holiday. He tweeted, “This July 4th, we must remember that we stand on stolen land toiled by enslaved Africans and recommit ourselves to the fight for freedom, equality, & justice so that these ideals are accessible to everyone, not just a privileged few.”
Challenging the Founding Fathers
Similarly, Bush took to social media to admonish the Declaration of Independence and its authors. She boldly stated, “The Declaration of Independence was written by enslavers and didn’t recognize Black people as human.”
As a prominent figure in the Black Lives Matter movement, Bush added, “Today is a great day to demand Reparations Now.”
As members of the progressive “Squad,” Bowman and Bush consistently advocate for issues like reparations and climate change policies akin to the Green New Deal.
Bowman, known for his outspoken nature, frequently engages in public clashes with Republicans such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. He recently expressed his disappointment with the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down race-based admissions at universities, vowing to fight for equitable access to higher education for Black and brown students.
Additionally, Bowman called for the cancellation of student debt, the provision of free public college, and an end to legacy admissions at universities.
Bush, on the other hand, introduced a bill to Congress that calls for a staggering $14 trillion in slavery reparations.
These representatives are unafraid to challenge the status quo and advocate for justice and equality, making their voices heard on issues that are often overlooked.
