Fort Stewart, an Army base in south Georgia, is under a lockdown on Wednesday after reports of an active shooter.

Five casualties have been reported, and law enforcement officers are on the scene. The shooter is in custody.

“Fort Stewart is in a lockdown status due to an active shooter incident in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area,” according to a Facebook post by the Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield account. “The installation was locked down at 11:04 a.m. and law enforcement is on the scene at the time. Casualties have been reported and the situation is ongoing.”

Base officials said earlier that all gates had been closed and that the commander advised a lockdown. Personnel are being directed to “stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors. Keep telephone lines open and report accountability to your leadership.”

An Army spokesperson said there have been 5 casualties but no deaths. They confirmed that the Savannah division of the FBI and the Hinesville Police Department was on scene. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation and the White House is monitoring the incident.

Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) said in a social media post that he was aware of the situation.

“I am monitoring the situation at Fort Stewart,” Carter wrote. “Please join me in prayers for the casualties, their families, and the brave law enforcement officers working to protect our community.”

Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) also wrote on social media that he was “saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart.”

“As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart,” Kemp wrote. “We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same.”
