“Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him when he passed. The former vice president died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease,” a statement given to Punchbowl News read.

“Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing. We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man,” the statement continued.

The former vice president was born in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1941. He dropped out of Yale University and then received his bachelors from the University of Wyoming. He worked in the White House during both the Nixon and Ford administration, then being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Wyoming. He served in Congress from 1978-1989. He was then chosen as Secretary of Defense during the Bush I administration in 1989.

Cheney had suffered from heart-related health issues much of his life. He had five heart attacks between 1978-2010, and underwent a successful heart transplant in 2012.

He was serving as vice president during the 9/11 attacks. He was seen as a chief architect of the Iraq War and known for his outsized influence behind the scenes during the Bush II administration.
