Former Tennessee Titans Tight End Frank Wycheck Dies at Age 52
Frank Wycheck, the legendary former Tennessee Titans tight end known for his role in the iconic “Music City Miracle,” passed away at the age of 52 on Saturday, according to his family.
In a statement released on Sunday, it was revealed that Wycheck had fallen inside his Chattanooga home, hitting his head in the process. He was found unresponsive later that afternoon.
Wycheck, born on October 14, 1971, in Philadelphia, had a successful career in the NFL. After playing college football at the University of Maryland, he was drafted in the sixth round in 1993. Over the course of his career, he made it to the Pro Bowl three times.
However, it was his unforgettable play during a playoff game against the Buffalo Bills in 2000 that solidified his place in football history. With seconds left on the clock, Wycheck threw a lateral pass to teammate Kevin Dyson in a kickoff return, resulting in a game-winning touchdown. This play became known as the “Music City Miracle.”

After retiring from the NFL in 2004 due to multiple concussions, Wycheck transitioned to radio commentary for the Titans. However, he stepped down in 2017 after suffering another concussion from a fall at his home.
In 2008, Wycheck joined a group of retired athletes who pledged to donate their brains to the Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) Center at Boston University’s School of Medicine for concussion research.

Wycheck’s family stated that they will continue to support ongoing brain injury and CTE research in accordance with his wishes.
Wycheck recently moved to Chattanooga to be closer to his family. He is survived by his two adult daughters, Deanna and Madison, as well as three grandchildren: Leo, Stevie, and August.
The Titans, the team with which Wycheck spent most of his NFL career, expressed their condolences, stating, “The Tennessee Titans mourn the loss of a beloved member of our Titans family, Frank Wycheck.”
Former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon also paid tribute to Wycheck, saying, “Saddened to hear of the passing of my friend and former teammate Frank Wycheck. Great man gone way too soon! RIP brother.”
Funeral services have not yet been announced, and the family has requested privacy during this difficult time.

He served as a color analyst for the Tennessee Titans’ radio broadcasts and was well-loved by fans for his incredible football knowledge and charismatic personality.
