Tim Wakefield, ex-Red Sox pitcher, passes away at 57.

Former Boston⁢ Red Sox pitcher, Tim Wakefield, has tragically passed away at the age of 57 due to⁣ brain cancer.

In a press ⁤release on Sunday morning, the ⁢baseball⁤ team announced⁣ the heartbreaking news of their beloved former pitcher’s passing.

“Our hearts are broken with the loss of Tim Wakefield,”‍ the Red Sox wrote. “Wake embodied true goodness; a devoted husband, father, and teammate, beloved broadcaster, and the ultimate community ‍leader. He gave ⁤so much to⁢ the⁤ game and all of ⁢Red ⁣Sox Nation.”

Earlier in the week, the MLB ‍team​ had issued a statement on X, the‌ social⁣ media formerly know as ‌Twitter, ‌saying that ⁢Wakefield was battling a “disease,”⁤ and⁢ requested privacy for the Wakefield family.

The 57-year-old was initially drafted as a first baseman⁣ but later became a renowned right-handed starting pitcher known ​for his exceptional knuckleball technique.⁢ He achieved an impressive record of‌ 200 wins ‍throughout his career.

After‍ spending two ⁤seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Wakefield⁤ joined the Red Sox for⁤ a remarkable 17-year tenure. During⁣ his time ⁣with the team, he won two World Series​ championships, including the​ historic 2004 ‌victory after‍ an‌ incredible comeback in ⁣the American League Championship ⁢Series.

Even after retiring from⁤ his 19-year playing career, Wakefield remained dedicated to the⁣ Red ⁢Sox organization, ⁣serving as ‍a player,‌ special assistant,‍ commentator,​ and honorary chairman of‍ the Red Sox Foundation ⁢for a total of 29 years.

Red Sox Owner John Henry expressed his heartfelt sentiments, stating that Wakefield’s ​legacy extended far beyond ⁢the⁤ record books.

“Tim’s ‌kindness and ‌indomitable​ spirit were as‍ legendary as his knuckleball,” said ⁤Henry. “He not only captivated us ‌on ⁣the field ⁤but‌ was the rare athlete whose legacy extended beyond the record books to the countless lives he ⁢touched with his ‍warmth and genuine spirit.‍ He had ⁤a remarkable ‍ability to uplift, inspire, and connect with others in ​a way that showed us​ the true definition of‍ greatness. He embodied the very best of what it means to be ⁣a member of ‍the Boston Red Sox and his loss is felt deeply⁢ by all of us.”

The‍ news of Wakefield’s medical condition ⁣was initially revealed by ⁣his former Red Sox ⁤teammate,​ Curt Schilling, on a podcast episode, causing controversy and prompting the⁤ Red Sox to issue a statement emphasizing​ that the⁣ information was⁢ shared ​without the Wakefield family’s‍ permission.

Tim Wakefield is ‍survived by his‌ wife ​Stacy and their children, Trevor ‌and⁢ Brianna.
