Ex-Intel Chief: No More ‘Disabled’ Presidents, Time for Youth.
Former Intelligence Official Calls for Younger President in the White House
In a thought-provoking statement, former top intelligence official Dan Coats emphasized the need for a younger president to occupy the White House. Coats, who served as director of national intelligence during the Trump administration, expressed his concerns about President Joe Biden’s advanced age as he seeks re-election in 2024, as reported by NBC News.
“As someone who just turned 80, I strongly believe that we need someone younger, whether it’s on the Democratic side or the Republican side,” Coats said.
Biden, who coincidentally shares the same age as Coats, is already the oldest person to hold the presidency. If re-elected, he would be 86 by the end of his second term. Concerns about Biden’s ability to lead effectively have been fueled by instances where he loses his train of thought while speaking and moments caught on camera where he has tripped or fallen over.
A recent survey revealed a growing number of voters expressing anxiety about Biden’s fitness to serve. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump, at the age of 77, is campaigning to regain the Oval Office.
“The weight of the world falls on the shoulders of the president, and right now, we have two disabled presidents,” Coats remarked, referring to Trump and Biden.
“Age plays a major factor in this, and people have to think about what the next generation will provide,” he added.
The NBC News report featured assurances from individuals in Biden’s circle that the president remains steady. It also included anecdotes from members of his administration praising his energy levels when not in the public eye.
House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who herself is 83 years old, dismissed concerns about Biden’s age in an interview with MSNBC. Pelosi referred to Biden as “just a kid” and encouraged him to embrace his age and experience.
However, the NBC News report also highlighted signs of an elder statesman becoming more cautious, such as using shorter stairs to board aircraft and employing extra-large font on teleprompters as time goes on.
One anonymous congressional Democrat stressed the importance of addressing concerns about Biden’s age within the Democratic Party.
“The number of text messages that I got after the president fell … I mean, my phone was blowing up. People are like, ‘Oh, this is so bad,’” the Democrat shared.
