Maryland Low-Income Residents to Receive Grocery Assistance
Great news for low-income residents in Maryland! If you are part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), you can expect to receive your grocery assistance payments for August within 10 days.
Snap payments will be sent out to residents starting on August 4th and will continue until August 23rd. The exact date you receive your benefits will depend on the first three letters of your last name.
Household and Income Requirements
In order to qualify for SNAP benefits, there are certain household and income requirements that applicants must meet. For a household of three, the maximum benefit is $740, while a household of eight can receive up to $1,691. Each additional member beyond eight adds $211 to the benefit amount. On average, each household member receives $180 per month.
While there is no asset limit in Maryland, households must meet specific gross income limits. For a family of one, the monthly income limit is $2,430. A household of three has a limit of $4,143, and a household of eight can earn up to $8,427.
How SNAP Works
SNAP benefits are issued on an electronic benefits transfer card, known as the Independence Card in Maryland. This card functions like a debit card and can be used at participating grocery or convenience stores to purchase qualifying food and drink items.
Currently, around 800,000 people, which is approximately 13% of Maryland’s population, receive food stamps in the state, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
