The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is Providing Assistance to Low-Income Households in Colorado
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is set to distribute February payments to low-income households in Colorado starting in two days. This program, also known as food stamps, will be sending out payments from Thursday through Feb. 10 in the Centennial State.
Colorado’s average payment per household member per month is $181, benefiting approximately 540,300 people, which accounts for 9% of the state’s population.
Maximum Benefits Based on Household Size
- Household of one: up to $291
- Household of five: up to $1,155
- Household of eight: up to $1,751
For each additional person, a household can receive up to $219. These amounts are determined by the recent cost-of-living adjustments for 2023-24.
SNAP benefits are distributed on specific dates based on the last digit of a household’s Social Security number. For example, households with SSNs ending in 3 will receive payments on Feb. 3, while those with SSNs ending in 7 will collect on Feb. 7, and so on. It’s important to note that households becoming eligible after Feb. 10 can still receive SNAP benefits for the month and won’t have to wait until March.
Benefits are loaded onto a prepaid Colorado Quest Card each month. This electronic benefits transfer card functions like a debit card and can be used at grocery stores, farmers markets, and select online retailers.
The funds are intended for purchasing groceries, snacks, fresh food, seeds, and plants. However, it’s important to remember that SNAP benefits cannot be used to buy nonfood household items, tobacco products, alcohol, pet food, or prepared foods.
