Five people – two children and three adults – were treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds after an argument on a Washington, D.C., bus escalated into a shooting Thursday evening. According to Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll, teh group was removed from the bus, continued fighting on the sidewalk near Military Road and 16th Street NW, and a man then pulled a gun and fired several rounds. No arrests have been made and investigators have not released a description of the shooter, who remains at large. Carroll criticized the prevalence of illegal firearms in the community. The incident comes as the federal government has extended a deployment of roughly 2,500 National Guard members to support law enforcement in the district.

Five people are being treated for gunshot wounds after a fight broke out on a Washington, D.C., bus Thursday evening.
Interim Chief of Police Jeffery Carroll said two kids and three adults received non-life-threatening injuries during the incident in Northwest Washington, D.C. They were engaged in an argument on the bus when a driver kicked them off, and the situation escalated into a gun fight, he said during a news conference. The suspect remains at large.
“This is not the way we resolve disputes. If there’s any sort of conflict, obviously, we work things out. We don’t pull out gunfire, and that’s the issue we have — too many illegal firearms here in the community,” Carroll said.
The development comes as the Trump administration has sought to target the district’s crime, which reached record highs in recent years. As part of the mission to support law enforcement, the White House has reportedly extended the deployment of about 2,500 National Guard members in the district through the end of this year.
The crime on Thursday evening started on the bus, but escalated when it stopped and the passengers disembarked onto the sidewalk. As they fought on the sidewalk, a man pulled out a gun and fired several rounds, hitting five people.

The shooting occurred near Military Road and 16th Street, NW, a typically safe area near Rock Creek Park.
