NH’s inaugural transgender state rep faces child pornography charges.
New Hampshire’s First Transgender State Representative Faces Serious Charges
In a shocking turn of events, Stacie-Marie Laughton, the first transgender state representative in New Hampshire, has been arrested and charged with distributing child sexual abuse images. The 39-year-old Democrat was taken into custody on Wednesday and appeared in Hillsborough Superior Court the following day to face multiple counts of distribution.
Arrests Extend to Laughton’s Girlfriend
But the story doesn’t end there. Laughton’s girlfriend, Lindsay Groves, 38, was also arrested on the same day. Groves, who worked at a daycare called Creative Minds in Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, is accused of not only sexually exploiting children but also distributing child pornography. Shockingly, investigators discovered a staggering 2,500 text messages between Groves and another individual that included explicit photos of the children under her care.
A Troubled Past
This isn’t the first time Laughton has found herself in legal trouble. With a criminal history dating back to 2021, including charges of providing false information to 911, Laughton’s previous felony convictions prevented her from taking office in 2012. However, she was reelected in the same year, only to step down after fellow Democratic lawmakers demanded her resignation.
The Serious Consequences
The charges against Laughton and Groves carry severe penalties. Sexual exploitation of children convictions can result in a minimum sentence of 15 years and up to 30 years in prison, along with at least five years and up to a lifetime of supervised release. Additionally, a fine of up to $250,000 may be imposed. Distribution of child pornography convictions carry a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and up to 20 years in prison, along with a mandatory minimum of five years of supervised release. The fine for this offense can also reach up to $250,000.
This shocking case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our most vulnerable members of society and the severe consequences that await those who exploit and harm children.
