First confirmed COVID-19 case reported in Olympic Village

The first case of coronavirus has found its way to the Olympic Village less than one week before the games are set to begin. Officials confirmed on Saturday that one person had tested positive for COVID-19 in the village where athletes and trainers are housed.
The person’s identity and vaccination status has not yet been disclosed, but they are currently under quarantine in their hotel room.

The current total of positive cases among Olympic and Paralympic related people is 15 as of Friday, which brings the confirmed case number up to 45 since July 1.
“It goes without saying that all the concerned people were immediately isolated and this way they do not pose any risks to other participants or to the Japanese population,” said Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee.
Meanwhile, Tokyo entered a state of emergency ahead of the games’ official start in just six days.
