Poll: Declining acceptance of same-sex relations in America.

Is the LGBT Movement Alienating Everyday Americans?

According to the results of Gallup’s annual “Values and Beliefs” poll, it seems that way.

This year’s Gallup poll, conducted from May 1 to May 24, revealed intriguing trends in the moral acceptability of various hot-button cultural issues.

The overall moral stances leaned conservative, with the most significant drop in support observed for “Gay or lesbian relations.”

This issue experienced a striking 7 percent decline, dropping from 71 percent support in 2022 to 64 percent in 2023.

Out of all the issues covered in the poll, this decline was the most pronounced.

Interestingly, the highest increase in support was seen for “the death penalty.”

The drop in moral acceptability of same-sex relationships is noteworthy for two reasons.

Firstly, it indicates a swing in the opposite direction, as the Gallup poll highlights that a record-high of 71 percent of American adults considered gay or lesbian relations morally acceptable in 2022.

The current figure of 64 percent is the lowest since 2019.

While it is unlikely that America will revert to the 38 percent support seen in 2002 or even the 54 percent support seen in 2012, the fact that the number is regressing at all should concern the most ardent LGBT advocates.

Gallup also notes that American support for gay or lesbian relations has remained above 60 percent since 2015.

The poll further reveals that the decline in support for gay relations is primarily driven by Republicans. Among Republicans polled, 41 percent find gay or lesbian relations morally acceptable, a significant drop from the 56 percent figure held a year ago.

Even Democratic support for gay relations decreased, from 85 percent in 2022 to 79 percent in 2023. Interestingly, Independent acceptability of gay and lesbian relations rose by a single percent.

While other cultural battlegrounds did not experience the same magnitude of change as gay or lesbian relations, most trends still pointed to a more conservative viewpoint.

For instance, although still widely viewed as favorable, the moral acceptability of “birth control,” “divorce,” and “sex between an unmarried man and woman” all fell by four, three, and four percentage points, respectively.

Even the lucrative pornography industry saw a decline in moral support.

Interestingly, the other significant drops in support occurred when animals were involved. Both “medical testing on animals” and “cloning animals” saw 4 percent decreases in support.

These findings from Gallup’s “Values and Beliefs” poll align with an earlier report based on the same poll, which found that social conservatism is at its highest point in about a decade.

In that breakdown, 38 percent of those polled identified as “very conservative/conservative,” while 29 percent identified as “very liberal/liberal.” In both 2021 and 2022, more people identified as liberal than conservative.

As for what this means in the bigger picture for 2024 and beyond, it is still too early to tell.

However, if this trend continues, Democrats will face challenges as the party moves further to the left.

According to this Gallup poll, it appears that is not what Americans want.
