Fetterman hits Dems for criticizing Maduro arrest after Biden upped bounty
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) accused fellow Democrats of hypocrisy for criticizing President Trump’s order to seize and arrest Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, arguing Democrats previously wanted Maduro removed and even supported measures like the $25 million bounty President Biden had offered. Fetterman said it would be easy for him to condemn the operation for partisan reasons but that doing so would be inconsistent. Many Democrats, including DNC chair Ken Martin and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, condemned the raid as an overreach-criticizing the lack of congressional authorization and a clear post-action plan-while some Republicans, such as Rand Paul and Thomas Massie, also opposed the tactics used. Fetterman praised the military’s efficiency in the operation and urged colleagues to acknowledge its effectiveness. Maduro has pleaded not guilty to the drug-trafficking charges brought by the department of Justice.
Fetterman hits ‘hypocrite’ Democrats criticizing Maduro arrest after Biden upped bounty
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) is hitting Democrats for their stance against the Trump administration’s capture of former Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, saying their responses are rooted in partisan politics.
Following the U.S. military’s seizure and arrest of Maduro this weekend, many Democrats have criticized President Donald Trump, coming out against the operation and arrest of the foreign leader as an overreach. Fetterman, known for his willingness to break ranks when he disagrees with his party, pointed to former President Joe Biden’s own move to increase the bounty on Maduro to $25 million.
“Democrats, we all agree he was a terrible person, and the kinds of chaos and misery he brought to Venezuela. And he’s gone. Why can’t we just say that’s a good thing?” Fetterman said, referring to Maduro in a radio interview with John Catsimatidis and Rita Cosby of the Cats & Cosby Show.
Fetterman said that as a Democrat, it would “make it easy” for him to condemn the Trump administration’s actions in toppling Maduro, but it would also make him a “hypocrite” to do so.
“As a Democrat, it would be very easy to condemn that, but it would make us a hypocrite too because the Democrats, we wanted him gone. And when something’s done, I don’t think we have to just criticize it or condemn something just because it comes from someone that’s a different party,” Fetterman said.
Chairman of the Democratic National Committee Ken Martin ripped the Trump administration’s Maduro seizure as “the worst kind of betrayal,” saying Trump “committed the United States to an uncertain role in South America with an indeterminate timeline.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) also bashed the Trump-ordered operation as a distraction “from skyrocketing costs Americans face and the historic cover up of the Epstein files” in a statement.
“Let me be clear: Nicolás Maduro is an illegitimate dictator. But launching military action without congressional authorization and without a credible plan for what comes next is reckless,” Schumer said.
On the GOP side of the aisle, Republicans from the Bluegrass State, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), have each spoken against the operation, regime change tactics, and the strikes on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean.
Fetterman asked Tuesday why Democrats can’t “also acknowledge how effective and efficient our military was” in the operation to oust Maduro.

“Now people almost forget that America is a force of good, order, and democracy in the world, in a darkening world,” Fetterman said.
Maduro pleaded not guilty to the drug trafficking charges put before him by the Department of Justice’s indictment.
