Fetterman backs Romney for Harvard president: Calls for shift from far-left views

Senator John Fetterman, a Harvard alumnus and Democrat from Pennsylvania, has publicly endorsed Senator Mitt Romney, a Republican from Utah, to be the next president of Harvard University. Fetterman advocates for a shift away from far-left ideologies at the university following concerns of antisemitism at Columbia University. ‌Romney’s nomination comes as interim ⁢President Alan Garber holds⁢ office.

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) has decided who he wants to be Harvard‘s next president, endorsing outgoing Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) to take the university’s top position, currently held by interim President Alan Garber.

As an alumnus of Harvard, and after this mad season of antisemitism at Columbia, I co-sign.

Garber took the position when Claudine Gay stepped down in December amid plagiarism allegations and Gay’s controversial testimony in front of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Fetterman, a Harvard alumnus, highlighted a Washington Post op-ed in the tweet in which he endorsed Romney. The op-ed was written by fellow Harvard alumnus Daniel Rosen, who, despite describing himself as a “lifelong Democrat,” endorsed Romney to take the reins at Harvard. Romney is also a Harvard graduate.

Romney announced last fall that he will not run for reelection at the end of this year, paving the way for a “new generation of leaders.”

“I make this suggestion in the sincere and robust hope that he is someone who can navigate the university through painful but necessary reform and drive back the antisemitism that is tarnishing the institution’s credibility,” Rosen wrote.

Fetterman has shared Rosen’s sentiment as a staunchly pro-Israel member of Congress, though his stance has drawn the ire of some, largely due to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

The potential move wouldn’t be a first for a U.S. senator. Former Sens. Ben Sasse and Bill Johnson have recently stepped down from their jobs in Congress to become presidents of universities.

The Washington Examiner reached out to Romney’s office for comment.
