Santos faces new charges: Accused of stealing donor identities and misusing their credit cards.
Rep. George Santos Faces Additional Charges in Superseding Indictment
Rep. George Santos (R-NY) has been hit with a 23-count superseding indictment, unsealed on Tuesday, that includes shocking allegations of stealing donor’s identities and using their credit cards for unauthorized purchases.
The new charges, which can be found here, consist of one count of conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States, two counts of wire fraud, two counts of making materially false statements to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), two counts of obstructing the FEC by falsifying records, two counts of aggravated identity theft, and one count of access device fraud.
Earlier this year, Santos was charged with seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds, and two counts of making materially false statements to the United States House of Representatives.
These new charges come after Nancy Marks, Santos’ former campaign treasurer, pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges last week. Marks played a role in falsely reporting that Santos made a $500,000 loan to his campaign, creating the illusion of greater support. However, Santos actually has less than $8,000 in his bank account.
Marks admitted to committing wire fraud, making materially false statements, obstructing the administration of the Federal Election Commission, and committing aggravated identity theft, according to federal prosecutors.
During the 2022 midterm elections, Santos and Marks allegedly conspired to deceive the Republican National Committee (RNC) by inflating the campaign’s fundraising numbers. Their goal was to secure financial backing from the party by creating the appearance of greater support.

The Department of Justice stated:
In addition, between approximately December 2021 and August 2022, Santos devised and executed a fraudulent scheme to steal the personal identity and financial information of contributors to his campaign. He then charged contributors’ credit cards repeatedly, without their authorization. Because of these unauthorized transactions, funds were transferred to Santos’s campaign, to the campaigns of other candidates for elected office, and to his own bank account. To conceal the true source of these funds and to circumvent campaign contribution limits, Santos falsely represented that some of the campaign contributions were made by other persons, such as his relatives or associates, rather than the true cardholders. Santos did not have authorization to use their names in this way.
Breon Peace, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Nicole M. Argentieri, Acting Assistant Attorney General of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, James Smith, Assistant Director-in-Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office (FBI), and Anne T. Donnelly, Nassau County District Attorney, jointly announced the superseding indictment.
“As alleged, Santos is charged with stealing people’s identities and making charges on his own donors’ credit cards without their authorization, lying to the FEC and, by extension, the public about the financial state of his campaign,” said United States Attorney Breon Peace. “Santos falsely inflated the campaign’s reported receipts with non-existent loans and contributions that were either fabricated or stolen.”
How have the charges against Santos and Marks affected public trust in our democratic system?
Ational Committee (RNC), as well as individual donors, by falsely representing the level of financial support for Santos’ campaign. According to the indictment, Santos and Marks used various fraudulent tactics to inflate the campaign’s financial status, including stealing the identities of donors and making unauthorized purchases using their credit cards.
The superseding indictment alleges that Santos and Marks conspired to commit offenses against the United States by engaging in wire fraud and making false statements to the FEC. They are also accused of obstructing the FEC by falsifying records and committing aggravated identity theft.
The seriousness of these charges cannot be overstated. If convicted, Santos could face significant prison time and significant fines. The allegations of stealing donor identities and using their credit cards for personal gain are not only illegal but also deeply unethical. This is a blatant breach of trust by an elected representative, who is supposed to serve the best interests of the public.
It is particularly concerning that these charges come on the heels of Nancy Marks’ guilty plea. Marks, who served as Santos’ campaign treasurer, admitted to committing wire fraud, making false statements, obstructing the administration of the FEC, and committing aggravated identity theft. This guilty plea further strengthens the case against Santos and raises questions about his involvement in the fraudulent activities.
The indictment highlights the importance of holding elected officials accountable for their actions. Santos, like any other individual, should not be above the law. The allegations against him strike at the heart of our democratic system, which relies on trust and transparency. If Santos is found guilty, it will be a clear indication that he has abused the power entrusted to him by the public.
This case should serve as a reminder to voters to carefully consider the character and integrity of the candidates they support. It is crucial that we research the backgrounds of those running for office and hold them to the highest ethical standards. Elected representatives have a responsibility to act in the best interests of their constituents and uphold the principles of honesty and integrity.
While the legal process will determine Santos’ guilt or innocence, these charges cast a dark cloud over his political career. If found guilty, it would be a betrayal not only to his constituents but also to the principles of democracy. The public deserves elected officials who are committed to serving their interests and upholding the law.
In the coming months, as this case unfolds, it is essential that the justice system operates efficiently and impartially. The truth must be revealed, and if Santos is indeed guilty, he must be held accountable for his actions. Only then can we begin to restore faith in our democratic institutions and move towards a government that truly serves the people.
As the legal proceedings progress, it is incumbent upon the public to closely monitor the developments and demand transparency from their elected officials. Our democracy relies on an informed and engaged citizenry that holds its representatives accountable. Let us hope that justice is served and that the actions of individuals like Santos are not tolerated or repeated in the future.
