FCC slaps record-breaking $300M fine on robocallers for auto-warranty scam.
The FCC Fights Back Against Robocall Scammers
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is taking a stand against phone scams by issuing a massive fine of nearly $300 million. This fine is aimed at an international network of robocallers, part of the FCC’s ongoing efforts to combat this pervasive issue.
The FCC made the announcement on Thursday, revealing that they had uncovered a “transnational illegal robocalling operation.” This operation involved a vast network of companies spanning the globe, responsible for over 5 billion robocalls to more than 500 million phone numbers in just three months of 2021. Since 2018, these scammers had been deceiving users by falsely claiming to offer vehicle services and selling auto warranties.
Protecting Consumers and Communication Networks
“We take seriously our responsibility to protect consumers and the integrity of U.S. communications networks from the onslaught of these types of pernicious calls,” stated Loyaan Egal, Chief of the FCC Enforcement Bureau.
In response to this illegal operation, the FCC took decisive action by instructing all U.S.-based voice service providers to block traffic from specific identifiable numbers associated with the network. This proactive measure resulted in a staggering 99% reduction in illegal calls from the network.
The network’s owners, Roy Cox and Aaron Michael Jones, were already under lifetime bans from making telemarketing calls due to previous lawsuits filed by the Federal Trade Commission and the state of Texas in 2013.
The FCC’s efforts to combat robocalls have been ongoing, driven by the surge in these unwanted calls in recent years. By imposing significant fines and implementing strict measures, the FCC aims to protect consumers and restore the integrity of communication networks.
