The FBI has arrested a suspect nearly five years after pipe bombs were planted near the Republican and Democratic national party headquarters in Washington, D.C., on the eve of January 6, 2021. Surveillance footage had captured the individual placing the devices, but the lengthy investigation had not led to an arrest until now. The delay in apprehending a suspect had sparked speculation, including from Representative Barry Loudermilk, who oversees the House select subcommittee on January 6. FBI makes arrest in connection to mystery Jan. 6 pipe bombs

The FBI arrested a suspect in connection with the pipe bombs that were planted in Washington, D.C., on the eve of Jan. 6, 2021.

The agency detained the suspect on Thursday morning, nearly five years after surveillance footage captured an individual planting the devices near the Republican and Democratic national party headquarters, according to NBC News and other outlets.

The government’s lengthy investigation and yearslong failure to arrest a suspect in connection with the case raised speculation about the incident, including from Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA), who heads the House select subcommittee on Jan. 6.

Last month, Loudermilk requested more information about former Vice President Kamala Harris’s Secret Service, who appeared to miss the pipe bomb planted by the DNC headquarters during a security sweep of the area. Police later discovered the bombs on Jan. 6.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has added fuel to the fire, expressing concern in November that the FBI, CIA, and Capitol Police “are implicated in this story.”
