FBI is investigating Michigan synagogue attack as a targeted act of violence. What to know

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) vowed to combat the “ancient and rampant evil” antisemitism that led to the attack on a Michigan synagogue this week, an incident the FBI is investigating as a “targeted act of violence”.

Wielding a rifle, the suspect rammed his vehicle into the Temple Israel Synagogue, known the “largest Reform synagogue” in the United States, on Thursday while school was in session in its early childhood learning center. Security responded immediately and no one was hurt besides the gunman, who was killed on site in a gunfire exchange with law enforcement.

Here are the latest details about the incident.

What happened?

The suspect, Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, drove a truck into the Temple Israel Synagogue and began driving through the halls of the place of worship.

A 911 call made at around 12:19 p.m. alerted local law enforcement that there was “an active shooter situation” at the Temple, West Bloomfield Township Chief of Police Dale Young said.

The suspect’s vehicle caught fire and ignited inside of the synagogue before security guards in the facility “engaged the individual and neutralized the threat,” killing the suspect. Law enforcement found several explosives and the rifle in the suspect’s car.

No students or synagogue teachers were injured or killed in the incident, though several law enforcement officers were treated for inhaling smoke from the fire. The suspect hit one synagogue security guard with his vehicle, and the security guard was taken to the hospital.

The FBI is leading the investigation of the incident as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community,” Jennifer Runyan, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office, said.

“This is a deeply disturbing and tragic incident, and our deepest sympathies are with the victims, their families, and the entire Jewish community. The FBI is here working with our state, local, and federal partners to investigate this incident,” Runyan said at a press conference Thursday.

Who is the suspect?

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Ghazali, 41, as the suspect of the attack. Ghazali is originally from Lebanon and immigrated to the U.S. in 2011 on an IR1 visa as the spouse of a U.S. citizen. He became a U.S. citizen himself in 2016. Ghazali’s motive is still unclear.

CBS reported on Friday that sources close to Ghazali said he became “devastated” after an Israeli airstrike killed several of his family members in Lebanon. Ghazali stopped working and contacted his ex-wife to tell her to take care of their children in the days leading up to the attack, which led to the ex-wofe contacting law enforcement, the outlet reported.

Authorities are now investigating this report, according to CNN. The Washington Examiner has reachesout to the FBI’s Detroit Field Office for comment.

Whitmer did not comment on whether the attack was related to the war in Iran when asked about it at a Friday morning press conference. She said, “putting my theories into the press is not going to help an investigation, so I’m going to refrain from that,” but she did say the attack comes at a time when antisemitism is at a historic high.

“I do know that we have seen a rise in antisemitism. We have seen it over many years, predating the conflict, but certainly it is at a historic high, and I worry that that will continue. And so it’s why I am calling on anyone with a platform to be very responsible with their rhetoric, not to identify or target the Jewish community. That is antisemitism at large,” Whitmer said.

The attack came on the same day as a shooting at Old Dominion University in Virginia, which the FBI is investigating as an act of terrorism. The suspect in that shooting had perviously shown support for ISIS and targeted an ROTC classroom at the university.

Leaders disavow the antisemitic attack

Whitmer encouraged Michiganders to call out and report antisemitism when they see it.

“Yesterday’s attack was antisemitism. It was hate, plain and simple. We will fight this ancient and rampant evil, we will stand together as we do it, and we will call it out. We must lower the rhetoric in this state and in this country, especially at this moment where we have seen such a rise in antisemitism and more attacks on the Jewish community,” Whitmer said.

Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) was also present at the Friday press conference and urged Americans that it is everyone’s “responsibility” to call out antisemitism when they see it, pointing out the Jewish Americans experience 10 times the number of hate crimes compared to other communities in the U.S..

“Whether anti semitism is coming from the left or the right, whether it’s coming from some group that you like or don’t like, you have a responsibility to call it out. Because when you don’t, it gives permission for people to climb that ladder of escalation that goes from saying hateful things online, to saying them in person, to graffiti, to ultimately violence,” Slotkin said.

The attack on Thursday and increased law enforcement presence across the U.S. around Jewish places of worship come as antisemitic attacks are on the rise in the United States.

Slotkin was also asked about the DHS shutdown and if that makes the community less prepared to respond to incidents like Thursday’s. She said the department is full of essential workers who are on call and are still “doing their jobs.”

“Certainly, we need to fund the Department of Homeland Security, and we need, in my view, to cut away all the conversation on ICE, which is its own conversation from all the core missions of the Department of Homeland Security,” Slotkin said.
