FBI fires agents who ‘weaponized law enforcement’ against US citizens, Patel says
FBI Director Kash Patel announced the firing of agents who “weaponized law enforcement” against U.S. citizens after revelations from an investigation.
Patel announced the terminations one day after it was revealed that bureau surveillance efforts after the Jan. 6 riots had extended to tracking the movements of some Republican senators. Among the purges was the termination of the CR-15 squad, the FBI’s Washington field office’s public corruption unit that helped special counsel Jack Smith in his investigation into President Donald Trump.
“They tracked the communications of GOP Senators. They weaponized law enforcement against the American people. That era is over. We fired those who acted unethically, dismantled the corrupt CR-15 squad, and launched an investigation. Transparency and accountability aren’t slogans, they’re promises kept,” Patel said in a post on X.
“We promised you transparency and accountability. We will continue to deliver on those promises. You deserve better,” FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said in his own post, echoing Patel’s comments.
A document obtained by Fox News Digital revealed that Smith and his “Arctic Frost” team investigating Jan. 6 were allegedly tracking the private phone calls of Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Ron Johnson (R-WI), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), and Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), as well as Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA).
FBI TRACKED GOP SENATORS’ LOCATIONS IN ADDITION TO PHONE RECORDS, HAWLEY SAYS
Whistleblower revelations from the past month revealed that Arctic Frost investigated conservative nonprofit organizations, including Turning Point USA and the Republican National Committee.
Attorney General Pam Bondi gave scant details about the congressional wiretapping during a hearing on Tuesday but assured Congress that Patel was working on it.
