The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation, but authorities believe that gas had accumulated over time and eventually ignited. The blast, deemed accidental, originated in a bedroom and did not cause damage to neighboring homes.
The Farley residence, situated on a spacious plot near Lake Norman, holds a significant value of nearly $2 million according to county property records.
In the aftermath of the explosion, the front yard was strewn with debris, including insulation hanging from trees, a king-size mattress, and a broken coffee mug with the words “Virginia Tech dad” lying on the lawn. Wood fragments and window frames were scattered up to 50 yards away from the blast site.
Kent Greene, director of Iredell County Fire Services and Emergency Management, expressed his astonishment that anyone managed to survive the catastrophic event. He stated, “There could not be anyone in it left alive—that was my first thought. And when I found out someone did walk out of it, I was amazed. This was a 6,300-square-foot home, and there’s nothing left but maybe a part of the garage.”
The homeowner, Caleb Farley, who hails from nearby Maiden, was not present during the explosion but arrived at the scene on Tuesday. Titans coach Mike Vrabel informed the team about Farley’s loss during a practice session in Nashville, prompting the players to kneel in prayer. Vrabel emphasized the team’s commitment to supporting Farley during this difficult time.
Caleb Farley, the 22nd overall pick in the 2021 draft, had been on injured reserve since November due to a back issue. As the Titans conclude their training camp, he is currently listed as physically unable to perform. In college, Farley made headlines as the first high-profile player to opt out of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, having already experienced the loss of his mother to cancer in 2018.
Titans safety Kevin Byard, who tragically lost his own mother in June 2022, offered words of support to Farley, urging him to lean on his faith during this challenging time. Byard stated, “I know he lost his mother at a young age as well, so he’s dealt with a lot of adversity as well. So just very tragic. And, you know, as a team and as a brother, all we can do and all I can do is to try to be there for him.”
Local resident Laura Wild, who lives two doors down from the explosion site, heard a loud boom but did not investigate immediately due to exhaustion from caring for her son’s newborn baby. She expressed her shock, saying, “When it happened I was like, ‘What was that?'”
