Trump co-defendant alleges Fani Willis submitted false claims about their connection
Fulton County District Attorney Accused of Falsehoods in Court Filing
In a dramatic twist to the Georgia 2020 election subversion case, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has been accused of submitting falsehoods in a court filing. The allegations stem from her admission of a “personal relationship” with prosecutor Nathan Wade, which has raised questions about her ability to handle the case.
Mike Roman, a campaign operative for former President Donald Trump, has come forward as the whistleblower who first revealed the existence of the relationship. He claims to have a witness who can testify at an upcoming evidentiary hearing, potentially disqualifying Willis from the case. Roman aims to prove that the relationship between Willis and Wade began before Wade was hired in 2022, citing conflicting statements made by Wade in different sworn statements.
“Mr. Wade has filed other affidavits in his divorce case which contradict this affidavit,” said Roman’s attorney Ashleigh Merchant during a recent hearing.
The allegations revolve around contradictory statements made by Wade in his divorce proceedings. In a filing from May 2023, Wade denied having any relations outside of his marriage. However, in an affidavit included in a recent filing for the Trump case, Wade admitted that his personal relationship with Willis started in 2022.
“So we’ve got two different declarations in two different courts – both sworn, both filed with the court – that say something completely different,” Merchant argued during the hearing.
If Roman’s claims are true, Wade may have committed perjury in his affidavit, potentially jeopardizing Willis’s defense against allegations of impropriety and financial gain. The evidentiary hearing, which was initially scheduled for two days, has now been extended to a third day to fully investigate the truth behind Roman’s accusations.
Willis is hoping to avoid testifying during the hearing, which will be livestreamed on YouTube. However, if permitted, Wade’s former law partner is prepared to testify that Willis and Wade’s personal relationship began before Wade’s hiring as a special prosecutor in the Trump case.
The defense’s claims have been met with skepticism from Special Prosecutor Anna Cross, who accused them of spreading unfounded claims for media attention. Cross argued that the accusations of cohabitation between Willis and Wade were untrue and amounted to gossip.
While it remains uncertain how the presiding judge, Scott McAfee, will rule on the subpoenas for Willis and other members of her office, he did reject a subpoena request for Wade’s bank accounts. Additionally, McAfee acknowledged the possibility that Roman’s allegations could lead to Willis’s disqualification, emphasizing the need for the evidentiary hearing to establish the facts.
Willis has been paying private sector lawyers high-dollar hourly rates to work on the case. Roman alleged that Willis was financially benefiting from her relationship with Wade, claiming that she went on vacations and dined with him after he received taxpayer-funded payments from her office.
Despite initial reports suggesting that Trump may attend the hearing, his attorney Steve Sadow confirmed that the former president will be attending a hearing in New York state court regarding the criminal hush money case brought against him by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
