FACT CHECK: Did A 2019 UN Report Find The Global Female Population Is More Than Double The Male Population?

An image shared on Facebook purportedly shows a 2019 “demography report” published by the United Nations (U.N.) stating the global female population is more than double the male population.

Verdict: False

The report is not from the U.N., according to a U.N. spokesperson. There are not more than twice as many females as males, according to the U.N.’s most recent population data.

Fact Check:

The image in the Facebook post shows what appears to be data from the U.N.’s “1st quarter Demography Report 2019.” The report allegedly found that in 2019, the global population on Earth was 7.88 billion, and that there were 5.6 billion women versus only 2.2 billion men. Of these 2.2 billion men, only 1 billion are available for marriage, and of those, 50 percent are “jobless,” 10 percent are “your relatives” and 32 percent are “above 66 years.” The post concludes by suggesting women “rethink before treating any man like trash.”

The image includes a link to an April 2019 article from a Nigerian newspaper the Independent, that reiterates the claims made in the post. The article does not link to the alleged U.N. report, and there is no record of the U.N. actually publishing such a report. (RELATED: Did The UN Announce It Will Become A ‘World Religion’?)

Check Your Fact searched the U.N.’s website, but found no instance of such a report. A wider internet search for the data turned up no report from the U.N. either, only other fact-checking organizations debunking the claim. Zina Alam, a spokesperson for the United Nations Population Fund confirmed in an email to Check Your Fact that the data is not from a genuine U.N. report.

“The data released in the Facebook post has not been retrieved from a UN report,” Alam said. “The UN does not publish a quarterly demographic report. The UN releases population reports every three to four years. The most recent World Population Prospects report was released on June 17, 2019.”

A review of the “2019 Revision of World Population Prospects” showed the global population was around 7.7 billion, including 3.82 billion females and 3.89 billion males.
