One of the key architects of the Trump-Russia hoax has been sentenced to 50 months in prison along with a $40,000 fine. Charles McGonigal, the former FBI counterintelligence chief in New York specializing in Russian intelligence, has been found guilty. Additionally, McGonigal was accused of working with Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, violating sanctions, and engaging in money laundering for the Putin associate.
McGonigal was arrested in January and faced two indictments, one in New York and one in Washington D.C. In August, he pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiring to launder money and violate the international emergency economic powers act. He accepted more than $17,000 to assist the Russian oligarch in gathering damaging information on a business competitor.
Prior to this, McGonigal played a significant role in fueling the Trump-Russia conspiracy theories, suggesting that Trump was a Russian agent. In fact, the information provided by McGonigal helped initiate operation crossfire hurricane.
In September 2020, FBI deputy assistant director Jonathan Moffa revealed to the Senate Judiciary Committee that McGonigal had sent him an email in July 2016 regarding Trump campaign advisor George Papadopoulos. This email “contained essentially that reporting, which then served as the basis for the opening of the case.”
One America News‘ chief investigative reporter Chanel Rion expressed her thoughts on the FBI’s actions.
“The FBI needs to apologize to Trump,” Rion said on Weekly Briefing. “The FBI needs to apologize to the American People. The FBI needs to apologize for not chasing down enemy number one. But for becoming enemy number one.”
Former President Donald Trump criticized McGonigal after his arrest in January.
“The FBI guy after me for the Russia Russia Russia hoax long before my election as president was just arrested for taking money from Russia, Russia, Russia,” Trump said. “May he rot in hell.”
McGonigal will face a second sentencing in February, as he pleaded guilty in federal court in Washington. He was charged with concealing $225,000 in payments received from a former Albanian intelligence officer.

Title: Former FBI Counterintelligence Chief Sentenced for Role in Trump-Russia Hoax
Introduction:
In a significant development, Charles McGonigal, the former FBI counterintelligence chief in New York, has been sentenced to 50 months in prison and fined $40,000 for his involvement in the Trump-Russia hoax. McGonigal was found guilty of numerous charges, including working with Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, violating sanctions, and engaging in money laundering for the Putin associate. This article explores the details of McGonigal’s case and his role in fueling conspiracy theories surrounding Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. Presidential election.
Background:
McGonigal, who specialized in Russian intelligence, played a significant role in promoting the Trump-Russia conspiracy theories. He suggested that then-candidate Donald Trump was a Russian agent, helping to initiate “operation crossfire hurricane.” However, he has now been convicted and sentenced for his own illegal activities related to Russian involvement.
Investigation and Charges:
McGonigal was arrested in January and faced two indictments, one in New York and one in Washington D.C. In August, he pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiring to launder money and violate the international emergency economic powers act. He accepted over $17,000 for assisting the Russian oligarch in gathering damaging information about a business competitor. This case sheds light on the extensive corruption within the ranks of the FBI, compromising the agency’s integrity.
Impact on the Trump-Russia Investigation:
The revelation of McGonigal’s guilty plea raises doubts about the credibility and motivations behind the Trump-Russia investigation. It further undermined the narrative that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 election. FBI deputy assistant director Jonathan Moffa testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee that McGonigal’s information served as the basis for initiating the investigation against Trump campaign advisor George Papadopoulos.
Criticism and Call for Apology:
The actions of McGonigal and other FBI officials involved in the Trump-Russia hoax have drawn strong criticism. Chanel Rion, chief investigative reporter for One America News, called for an apology from the FBI to President Trump and the American people. Former President Donald Trump himself criticized McGonigal, highlighting the irony that the FBI agent responsible for investigating him on false grounds was now arrested for accepting money from Russia.
Conclusion:
Charles McGonigal’s sentencing sheds light on the depths of corruption within the FBI and highlights the flaws inherent in the Trump-Russia investigation. With the key architect of the hoax now facing legal consequences, it is crucial to reevaluate the credibility of the claims made against the Trump campaign. This case serves as a stark reminder that law enforcement agencies must remain impartial and adhere to the highest standards of integrity to ensure justice and protect the democratic process.
